Heat Exchanger Information
Tuesday, July 01, 2008 2:35 PM
Some might be looking for some info on what to use for the heat exchanger plumbing, here is what i used:

-5 3/4" plastic elbows from ace
-roughly 20 3/4" hose clamps from napa
-13ft 3/4" heater hose from napa: was $26 with about 12 clamps
-6 self drilling sheet metal screws from ace
-4 small bolts/nuts to hold the brackets together from ace
-bunch of zip ties, 100pk of 75lb was about $16
-little "reservoir" thing that mounts to the blower: $30 with the cap from gmpartsdirect.com PN 22697069 i believe, cap PN 15076936
-for the brackets, a buddy made em out of some steel sheets from ace, just bent them like a Z and added a 2.5" piece to have the exchanger sit a little further back towards the condenser, ill post measurements later.
-bought a bracket from ace to mount the pump with, it forms a circle with 2 flat spots on each side for screws and has a threaded hole in the middle of one to put a bolt through, i used that to mount it to the top of the subframe
- mini fuse tap for the pump. i tapped the PCM fuse in the car so it turns on with the key; can get one from advance or checker

bought a cobra H/E from svtperformance.com off of a guy in the classifieds for 100 shipped
bought a lightning intercooler pump from ebay for about 100 shipped
had to get the wiring for it, was about $30 from a ford dealership

i think thats about it, thanks tom and justin for the help

if i forgot anything, post it up and ill try to post up a few pics and the measurements

measurements of the bracket my buddy made: 2" on the top, 6.5" tall, 5" on the bottom

sticky this maybe?

How did you put it together? Specifically where did you put the pump, how did you run the inlet or outlet lines and where did you tie in the reservoir?

Re: Heat Exchanger Information

pump is on top of the subframe (pretty much in front of and lower than the trans), the bracket from ace made it easy, outlet from the pump goes to the bottom of the heat exchanger, inlet of the pump comes from the manifold with the reservoir in between. reservoir is attached to the blower with the bracket made for it by gm. ill snap some pictures and post them this weekend.

I am very happy to see the still growing interest in this blower set up... so happy I am currently in my spare time not only working on a base tune in hpt using the 1 bar for everyone (basically complete) but also Making A custom h/e mounting kit for J-bodies. All harware will be included and cut to spec unline the bwoody brackets...

making a base tune like the gm reflash but better for the m62 with the 2bar sensor would be sweet

if i could afford hpt right now i would get it but money is tight so ill have to settle for the gm reflash for now

we can't use 2bars with hpt.

with roots blower, a 1 bar will work. You build power so consistently a 2 bar WOULD BE BEST but isn't necessary at all.

vega, tuning question, would the wide band be accurate if i replaced my post cat o2 sensor with the WB o2 sensor? curious about that, if so ill probably hook it up this weekend or something.. thanks

ill take some pics tomorrow since ill be working on the car anyway

no ur wideband should closer to your header.

def should be closer to the header. I have a 4-2-1 header and mine is mounted bout 3 inches from where it becomes 1. basically in the downpipe.

damn guess i need to find someone to weld a bung into my downpipe

the whole purpose to get the most accurate reading closest to the actual cylinders. Post cat, is after the cat did its work on the exhaust gases. Comparing wideband read outs from my wideband and the wideband in my exhaust tip on the dyno were a world of difference.

so how about those pictures of the routing of the heat exchanger I am waiting for the reservoir which should be in monday and the its just a matter of putting it on.

here are the pictures. some might be blurry as the batteries in my camera were low so it was having a hard time focusing.

ripped the dash apart and fixed the middle heater vents, they work now woot. stupid foam blocking it..

i took a few of the pump under the car so you can see the bracket i used, also took some close ups of the exchanger through the bumper and of how the hose was routed having the nipples facing forward.

note on holding the exchanger to brackets, used 3 zip ties on each side 1 on bottom each side. also put toolbox matting between the exchanger and brackets to prevent the metal on metal contact.

note on the manifold, PITA to get to. so cramped its hard to jam the elbows and hosing in there.. (thanks tom [wrench monkey] for getting that stuff on there and helping and thanks for the formed hosing and help justin )

im pretty sure thats it, if not & still have a question, just ask.

brackets after being painted

how the reservoir is mounted

where the pump is grounded

top view pump

pump driver side view from under

pump pass side view from under

pass side exchanger from front

hose routing, zip tied to bumper support

2 self drilling sheet metal screws driver side holding bracket to support

pass side ^^

manifold top (damn air bubble keeps sitting in that elbow on the top..)

manifold bottom (used a 90 deg formed heater hose from a cobalt ss)

pump power (used mini fuse tap, tapped the cruise control fuse since i dont have it anymore anyway)

power wire routed this way from engine bay (goes through grey grommet on firewall along with the vacuum line for the boost gauge)

vacuum T

boost gauge & power source (grounded to a bolt under steering column)

pump close ups so you can see the bracket

funny

stupid

hope that answers any questions, if not let me know.

oh also wrapped the pump in that toolbox matting btwn the bracket and pump so its snug and isnt metal on pump contact

okay so let me brake this down (for the less mechanically inclined)...1. outlet of the pump connects to the bottom of the heat exchanger 2. inlet of pump connects to one of the ports on the manifold with the reservoir in between. so what connects to the remaining manifold port and heat exchanger port? or did I just answer my own question?

Re: Heat Exchanger Information
Monday, July 07, 2008 9:33 PM
my pump outlet goes to heat exchanger bottom, heat exchanger top goes to manifold bottom, manifold top goes through "reservoir" to the pump inlet.
