Supercharger steals horsepower?

Does a supercharger really horsepower from your car? I read this on a website, "It takes horsepower away from the engine to drive the supercharger."

well, yes.. technically, it does. but in turn it adds more then it takes away so thats why having one is an advantage.

the supercharger is driven by the drive belt, or in a j-body's case... a 'serpentine' belt. the same belt that spins the alternator and ac compressor. it works the same way with a supercharger.

You look so much cuter with something in your mouth.

Man...c'mon....anything that runs off the belt is SUCKING power except for the power source - the crank pulley. The energy's term used is called "shaft-work" and directly sinks energy measurable in Joules per second or watts, which can be related directly to HP.

Nothing is free man...nothing turns without energy input!

And also, it doesn't always add more than it takes away either....highway driving....just cruising....its just an energy sink robbing power and dropping gas mileage. How much? not much and who cares it will still be good enough...its a J!

Yes instead of saying "steals" horsepower, think of it like, the supercharger "uses" some of the engine power to make more power..

Steal makes a supercharger sound like a negative performance modification..

Ayup. If it was a net loss of horsepower, they wouldn't use them in Top Fuel. The claim in top fuel is that the supercharger takes more horsepower to spin than a stock Hemi V8 puts out.

but what's 500HP when you're making 3k+?

The key is that you have a net gain of HP when you are accelerating. Technically speaking an exhaust-driven turbocharger also uses a certain amount of horsepower to run, but it's not as obvious. Think about it, it is an exhaust restriction, it's just that by cramming the air back into the front of the engine (like a supercharger does), you end up with a net gain overall.

A little food for thought, here is a power consumption map for a M45.

The charts go by the speed of the S/C's input shaft not engine RPM. So once you do the math for the rpm gain on the pulleys and belt you can hit those numbers. My Vortech's impeller speed will be close to 40,000 RPM once i get that in.

Currently I'm spinning the M62 at approx 18200 RPM w/ the 2.8 pulley at 8150 rpm, I still plan to go to a slightly smaller pulley and spin it to around 19,500
