WG stuck open..?
Monday, April 20, 2009 10:37 AM
Ok does this make any sense what so ever.. Ok my MBC is hooked up correctly id hope, from compressor housing to MBC than to SIDE of WG. My car will only boost to 5psi (my WG spring is 5) If it is hooked up any different it will not boost at all. My MBC doesn't raise my boost levels i cannot see past 5. But my problem persists of when im pulling in 2 or 3 rd whatever doesn't matter what gear, im WOT seeing 5psi, when i shift i immediately loose all my pressure ok thats fine but it wont build back up i can hear my gate open, its open dump, but it wont build boost back up. Im thinking my gate is stuck open after shifting but how would this be possible if i can come to a stop, pull again in 2nd build boost and then same problem. Im not sure if im overlooking something obv here or what. I think im just going to get a .6 bar spring and see what happens. Any suggestions..

do you still have the ring that goes under the w/g?

Before doing anything else, check to make sure you hooked up the MBC properly (not sure if they only work one way, switch the 2 lines around and see if that fixes anything)
Post a link to your MBC. The controller could possibly be shot if it's a cheap one.

If still nothing then Try moving the one connection from the compressor housing, to just before the throttle plate and see if that fixes it.

Also post pictures so we can see if a vac line just happens to be out of place.

Also, if it came with a resitrictor, did you remember to install it?

thats how its setup, its a cheap MBC so that must be the problem, in that case ill just get the .6 bar spring.

LINK

I just found that on ebay, and it even has the instructions in the ad.

Left side of MBC - goes to the top of the wastegate

Right side of MBC - goes to the SIDE port of the wastegate

that's what i was thinking. If you're really worried about hooking it up thaat way, just go buy a Turbosmart MBC. They're nice units, and you won't be stuck with just a .6bar spring.

I must say, i love my Hallman boost controller. Not a single problem and super easy to adjust.

Yeah i heard hallman was nice, but thrice i hooked up my WG without the MBC, turbo to the side of the WG and it just opens the gate when i should be hitting boost, the only way the car boosts is with that piece of @!#$ MBC on and it doesn't even hit full 5 .. and now im only seeing 1-2 its a headache..

That is uber weird. So even with the compressor hooked up straight to the SIDE port of the WG you don't hit any boost at all?.....hmmm...

Take off your wastegate and take it apart. The diaphragm could be torn or something strange causing it to stay open.

Take a couple more pictures from different angles and hopefully i can spot somethin.

Ive had problems boosting ever since i turbod it, its a pain in the ass, but my WG is good ive checked it out before. Its werid how it will boost the WG spring with the MBC hooked up the way it is in the picture.. I will have to see when my spring comes in.

Check for boost leaks, bench test the wastegate with an air compressor and see if it opens properly. Check to see if your turbo has any shaft play, in and out/side to side. Get yourself a real MBC not any ebay garbage. Get a Hallman and be done with it as mentioned above. They are by far the best MBC on the market and I have never once seen one fail. Check all those things and let us know if you find anything
