Priming oil system...Necessary?

Is there any reason to or is it necessary to prime the oil system when installing a turbo? Im putting mine on today and just wondering. Thought I read about this somewhere but couldn't find anything.

To get some oil flowing to the turbo bearings. Running it immediately they are dry and can damage the turbo.

And how exactly do you do this?

Few dif ways. I just unplug the icm connector, and try to crank the motor for 5-10 seconds.

Unplug the fuel pump relay, or even the ICM plug as mentioned...

Crank the car for about 5 seconds a shot 3-4 times. This should prime the system and put oil in the top end and get some oil into the bearings.

When you fire the engine, monitor your oil pressure. DO NOT REV THE MOTOR to try and make boost - you won't... and this is not good on a turbo that's just getting oil for the first time.

The turbo will smoke externally due to oil and hand grease and sealant, etc... don't stress. Idle the car for about 10-15 mins and this will go away, once the car is up to operating temperature, check everywhere for leaks, make sure it's all buttoned up - and you're ok.

Good luck.

Cool! Thanks guys!

Yeah, the fuel pump relay is the one I heard about. ICM sounds the easiest so ill just do that.

Thanks again!
