Turbo question for my build...
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 7:18 PM
A buddy of mine is offering me a Holset Turbo for $125 and I wanted to know if it is worth getting for my vehicle. I am putting this together piece by piece so I can get a respectable system, not looking for top of the line but don't want a junk system if you know what I mean. The turbo is a Holset H1C and when I asked the trim he text me the following, "57 a r compressor, 60-65 exhaust i think." Does that sound like it would be a good turbo to throw on my 2.2 ohv motor? In addition he mentioned there is "a little side to side play" and that a rebuild would take care of it no problem. In all would this be a worth while buy or should I keep looking? Sorry if I am missing any crucial details but I am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to FI.

From my quick google search, it looks like the H1C is a tad bigger than the HX35 - and the HX35 is a BIG BOY. I don't know what your plans are, but for that turbo on a 2.2 you would probably need to run 25 PSI just get it into the meat of the compressor map. And even then she probably wouldn't hit max boost until 3800 RPM.

You have a '95 2.2. Only saving grace is that it is a stick.

You will need to do a top feed conversion for upgraded injectors, And have the equipment available to burn chips for your OBDI PCM as HPT is only OBDII.

These items will need to be addressed regardless of boost levels.

From the looks of it, This may be going on a stock motor. It will never survive that as is lol

Allow me to start off with it will not be going on a stock motor as I have got the motor pulled, still working on that damn transmission, and will be upgrading the internals as time progresses. I am in no hurry to get this done as my license is currently suspended so time is abundant and money comes at its own rate. Now allow me to let my noob shine here with some new questions, mind you I have knowledge, just not so much in FI.
1. What is all involved in a top feed conversion and why do I need this for upgraded injectors? I figured that I could just get bigger injectors and that would be a solid deal, wrong I take it?
2. "burn chips for your OBDI PCM as HPT is only OBDII" What I am gathering is that I need to find someone that knows how to do that? Any recommendations?
3. "you would probably need to run 25 PSI just get it into the meat of the compressor map" Could this be explained in lament terms?

I don't know if tuner cat works with the 2.2L, but it's an emulator that works as an EEPROM, so that you don't have to keep burning tunes.

Not really. If you don't understand compressor maps then the theory is lost on you...sorry. However, 25PSI (~2.5 BAR) is hardly necessary. It's true that diesel turbos prefer higher pressure ratios, but you can still make good power out of a Holset at lower boost pressure. The H1C is the old version of the HX35, and they are pretty comparable. Like Wagonwes said, you're probably going to have some trouble spooling a turbo like this with a 2.2L OHV, With a nice cam and some headwork, I think it would work just fine however.

and some friendly advice...
You need to ask your buddy what type of exhaust housing he has on it (12 cm^2, 16 cm^2, 18 cm^2, etc.), as that's going to be the main factor in how well you can spool it. If it's larger than 12 cm^2, don't waste your time. Also, check for any kind of shaft play. There's a good chance he got it off a high mileage Cummins and the turbo might not have much left in it.

sorry, just now saw that your buddy said there's some "side to side" play. I don't know. $125 isn't terrible for a used Holset in this condition, but it's not exactly a "steal." I personally would pass.

Alright thanks for the input, I got a book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell that I started reading to get more incite on what I am doing here. I am thinking I might pass but I am keeping options open right now. I been looking into some cams and pistons and am open to any good links as far as getting parts for this motor. And you know the head is getting some work done also plan on boring the block a little bit but am not sure a safe size to bore it to to keep structural integrity there with the boost. I heard good things about this book as far as information goes so I will have my nose in this for a few days and hope to get some firsthand help on here to get this done rite.

I didn't say that you couldn't run less. I just said that it would probably be the best pressure to run for the suggested motor/turbo combo. You can run less, it just wont be in the middle of the map.

Here is a screen shot from my own turbo sizer excel sheet (for a 2.2 on 25 PSI): http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9599/cavicalc.jpg

Here are those points plotted on a HX35 map (ignore the red): http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/4536/hx35cavi.jpg

As you can see, it is near the middle of the map, as I anticipated. You can also see that you could run less boost, you just wont be very far into the map.
