Clearance ideas - auto

Any ideas how to clear the shift linkage on an auto tranny? This is how it sits now...(don;t mind the fluid mess) There's no room for an intake. Last setup I just used a screen on the turbo but would really prefer not to do that again. I unbolted the bottom bolt on the linkage bracket and swung it over the the driver side as much as possible, but that still only gives about 3/4" of clearance... Ideas?

Anyone? I've gone through just about ever scenario I could think of and can't come up with a solution other than trying to remake a new shift linkage bracket which I don't see and an easy task. I don't believe there would be room to flip the turbo so compressor/turbine are switched. An extension off the manifold would only push it back father, which still wouldn't clear the linkage. The only poss thing I can come up with is to somehow lift the turbo up 2 inches or so. If I fabricate a 45* adapter that MAY do it, but then the compressor would be directly against the heater hose nipple give me no room to connect the lines. I noticed that the farther away from the compressor I move that bracket from its stock location, it start to engage into a diff gear.

wow thats really a crap deal there.... i honestly cant provide much advice other than maybe a ghetto way and run a foam filter thats cut around the shift linkage and taped up for a seal LOL

Get a different turbo manifold.

its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa

Alright, I was able to bend a spare linkage bracket I had so it would sit lower than the inlet. Got it so there's enough clearance now, but the linkage must have moved proximal to the selector because now its off by a gear. A little more tinkering and I'll prob be able to get it right hopefully.

Maybe... That's with an exploited ss log manifold. My last setup used a super 60 and there was more room in there, but this is with a bigger snail now, so clearance went down to what you see which is just about zero.

if you have a turbo that you can have the outlet on the passenger side it will make a lot of difference too.

Can you not flip the turbo around and clock the turbo?

Nope.. I wish. That would simplify everything. There's not enough clearance between the firewall if it gets flipped. The compressor hits.

use a jbody jack and massage the firewall a little.

jbody jack? I'd have to look again, but if I recall correctly, the compressor also would hit the water pump.

the depth of the manifold should be all the clearance on that side for you. look around in the photos and media section,it should show you how others have gotten around the same problems. I already know I'm going to need to "massage" the fire wall to fit mine in there.

I looked through a bunch of builds and of course found a few with the compressor on the passenger side with a log manifold, but none that I came across showed how the firewall was defeated. On my first build/cavy I remember I tried hammering the wall and it barely budged, but there was also really no room to swing a hammer either. So whats this jbody jack?

The stock jack in your trunk for a Jbody....seriously put a board against your head and crank it against the firewall...the firewall will move.

I got mine from a car that had a manual trans, it will clear the auto trans on the bottom but im not sure about this. I already have charge pipes that will just bolt on if this problem isnt an issue.

Screw it, if I have this issue I'll buy one of these foam filters and band clamp the bastard!

almost sounds like it would be easier to have a new manifold made...

i had the same issue with a gt35 in a cobalt which has less room then a jbody. i made a manifold that angles the exhaust flange down 45 degrees. i mounted the turbo with the compressor side towards the passenger side of vehicle. i have 1/2 clearance at the firewall and water pump.

I ran into that issue on my auto, but my manifold didnt angle the turbo down. My method to run a filter was to weld a 3" 90* elbow up from the compressor, then ran the filter from that. It brought it up between the cam tower and master cylinder.

Just make sure to have that foam filter between 2 pieces of mesh other wise it will suck right into the turbo.

My dad has the Edelbrock air cleaner that uses that filter and sucked it through his carb.

This is the route Im looking to go as well. My inlet is about 3/4" away from the brake booster.
