i have a 98 cavalier with a 2200 3 speed transmission, when i put it into gear it stalls.. It will move if i hold it to the floor and drop it into gear it will go and run fine after i get to about 15 or so.. Reverse bangs hard and stalls as well but i still have all the gears if i can get it moving.. I need help cause im lost and so is everyone else tryin to help me.
If you don't have the factory Gm service manual...I hate to actually be saying this but...you might have to take it...to the dealer...AAAhhhggg!! there I said it!!!, but I have the books for my 96 and I'll take a look in it and see what they're gonna tell you, should be the same trans as I got
sounds like your torque converter is not unlocking, going to need to drop the tranny
Its not how fast your car goes....its how much nerve the driver has to push it that fast.
there is a brake release switch that releases the torque converter clutch each time the brake is pressed, but this is right from the book: "Engine stalls during reverse or drive engagement", check-auxiliary valve body, cause-missing or clogged torque converter clutch auxiliary valve body filter. I would check the fluid, maybe even drop the pan and see what's in there, you might end up just needing a trans flush.
sounds like torque converter clutch. could just simply unplugg it like i did, or pay about 150 for the dealership to replace
the fun has just begun

I looked at the replies. I thought the following:
Wow
True, but Wow
Wow
and.... wow
The torque converter isnt unlocking. This would be like holding the brake down on a 5spd car, then releasing the clutch. It's just gonna stop the motor.
Likely, you're not going to need to drop the tranny, or take it to the dealer. Most likely the problem is the TCC (Torque converter clutch) solenoid. This is what causes the torque converter to lock/unlock. It's actually very common for this to go bad and cause the same problem that you're having. Also at times people will come to a stop, and it wont unlock... then the car will shake really hard, then sall. Just like riding on the brake on a stick, coming to a stop.. yet never hitting the clutch.

That's why I suggested taking it to the dealer because it doesn't even sound like this kid owns a service book at all for this car because this problem is covered in any/all of them. And if he ain't got a book he won't even be able to even find the solenoid, let alone change it. And dafakez24, unplugging it isn't good for your gas mileage at all.
I have the solution to your problem!!! My 95 3 speed sunfire did the EXACT SAME thing last april. It would drive great on the highway, but if it slowed down to like 15 mph it would sound really bad, and lotsa jerkin, and then would stall the engine. I'd have to start the car, rev up and drop it into a gear and chirp the tires to get anywhere. I took it to get looked at, (this was before I would try to figure out stuff on my own) and AAMCO discovered that its the transmission solonoid. and it would only do it on my car when it was warmed up, not cold. They guy said the solonoids are very weird, they just cause all kinds of weird problems. I got it replaced and it fixed everything. in my honest opinion, thats your problem. AAMCO will give you a free diagnostic, but its hard to replicate that problem, at least with my car. cause it only did it warm. You're may do it all the time. So, look into seeing if thats it.
Oh, and by the way, the bill was about $330 i think. Oh, but i have the fluid changed too for like $70 or something. So, may be around $250.
ok, i just pulled out the receipts, and the part is $65, and total labor was 223.59 but that also included the tranny fluid change. So, just FYI.
Unplug it. Next time you try to leave, if you gotta do the giver and go, once it unlocked, it will not try to engage anymore. The sole purpose of this is gas mileage and the difference in mileage is makes is hardly work the money you'll pay to fix it. Just unplug the thing. That's what I did on my gf's GT turbo

Good point. But I try to avoid the dealership as much as possible. They seem to be a little excessive when it comes to the charge for labor. Perhaps a shop, but not the dealer.

Thanks for ur help.. I ended up havin a mechanic look at it and found out the Torque converter had locked up when it got warm like ya said but wouldnt disengage, so i had a price qoute to fix the transmission in it and it was costing me around 1300$ to have it taken out and sent away to be rebuilt, all the just to fix 1 damn sensor.. I went out and bought a used tranny today with a 108,000 miles on it for 175$ N being charged 175$ to have mine taken out and this one put in, everyone said it was a good price.. does it sound to high or sound like a good deal?
The TCC solenoid can be replaced with the tranny in the car . It is a simple procedure once you remove the drivers side wheel and fender well lining . You remove the pan on the side of the tranny , and there it is staring you in the face . It is located at the bottom of the valve body with two presuure sensors connected to it .
The solenoid can be bought for around $30.00 .
Mr. Goodwrench u are wise. Hes right it will take all of a hour to replace and cost about 50 to 60 bucks. and when u replace it change ur tranny fluid and filter while ur working on it. that repair is practically dummy proof all u need is some basic hand tools and patience. there is no need for a book cuz all u gotta do is remove the side cover adn its right there. good luck with the repair
I had to bring this back up because its the only post I could find on it. I'm about ready to change out this little bastard tomorrow because im having the same problem.
My question is, since it seems to be a common problem, would you guys like me to make a FAQ on it that could go into the sites FAQ section? Reason being because from the sound of it, dealers are going to rape you when it comes to the cost of fixing it.
I bought the solenoid for under $30, and the valve body gasket for $7. All you really need to is a simple understanding of it, and some simple tools. So why pay hundreds of dollars to a dealer to have it done?
Let me know guys, I wanna know if spending the time on the FAQ would be worth it or not.
anyone?
this forum is so dead
Sure thing Meckster , A fax would help a lot of people who ask about this problem .
