Hi ppl,
I have a 96 Cavy with 2.2 STOCK and stickshift... (since less than 15 days... consider me a noob!) and don't have a tach. Also, I have a 2.8 Corsica with stick and tach since 5 years ago...
With the Corsica I used to reach easily and smooth more than 60 mph in 3rd gear... (at 4200 rpm) I remember that the 3rd gear was the decisive shift to beat the competitors on any improvised race (specially with japanese cars)
Now, with the Cavy, all I have to do is to feel the revolutions and shift... so for a normal driving I shift at the current speeds:
1st ... until 10 mph
2nd... until 25 mph
3rd.... until 45 mph (revving normally, at this speed, the engine changes the sound and feels like need to upshift)
4th.... until 70 mph
5th... until... still don't know, but reached 95 mph nights ago
But for any emergency, I made a proof...
2nd... until 30 mph
3rd... until 60 mph (revving hardly 'til I feel that the engine can't give me more power)
Ok... am I shifting correctly? or in that way I will have my engine blowed? Thanks for your feedback!
Usually if I' driving a car without a tach I shift like this:
1st to 10
2nd to 25
3rd to 35
4th to 45
but every car is different so you hav to work of the sound and how the car feels.
Now, me personally, i'd put a cluster form a 95 or 96 Z24 in there. You'd have to swat the odo tumblers from your car into the new car and reset the passlock system (no biggy takes about 15 minutes) so i could get a tach on the car. A junk yard will be your best bet, and shouldn't be no more than $30
Damn, I didn't know they made stickshifts without a tach? That'd be a pain in the ass too me, lol
Shift when the fuel is cut off
For getting the most performance, take the car out and do some testing. Go through each gear and find out what the cut off speed is in each gear and shift a little before that.
For daily driving under nomal conditions, DeadBob got it about right.
Best bet is a tach, either aftermarket or from a Z24.
Yep, I was thinking the same... where in the hell the stickshifts cars comes w/o tachs... grrrrr... btw, Will have to make a search at EBay, cuz there are no junkyards around here...
Today shifted with DeadBob's way and the engine worked so fine, soooo smooth... it's okay for everyday use... thx...
anyway I'll have to test it in case I need performance.

A friend of mine had a 98 cav 5spd no tach wtf no tach, just shift til you smell smoke baby!!! hahah
fat girls make your car lower......
Alright I have a 00' 2200, so the gearing in my tranny might be a bit different but I couldn't imagine by much.
Here's where my car tops out at in each gear:
1 - 20
2 - 50
3 - 80
4 - limiter
5 - wouldn't use it for performance lol, but for everyday driving I use it when I hit 50
20, 50 and 80?????!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! Any mods in your car to reach that?
i've heard most people can shift by sound and feel of the car. no need for a tach, my stepdad is that way

My friend Paul can do that. Hell, he doesn't look at the tach, and he barely uses his clutch. He's been driving stick for 5 years too. Damn professionals -_-
