My car as been throwing a code for the TCC or Torque Converter Clutch. I was told by a highly recommended trans guy that this means the clutch is slipping. He told me that the tranny will have to be pulled and parts replaced. He went on to recommend that at 125,000 miles I should just rebuild the trans while it's out. I'm looking to get some opinions and some experienced input on this problem. How much should I be looking at realistically for a tranny rebuild or to simply fix this problem. hey nate! this is nate. lol. i have a 96 cavalier with a 2.2 LN4 and a 4T40-E. i had the same problem. i had a P1887 code, probly the same one you have. the problem is the pump seal is leaking. there pretty common for that. the fix is to pull the side cover off, pull the pump off (like 8 bolts) and replace the seal. now the seal is apart of the bearing so you have to order the whole thing. its just pressed in there. i had to replace my pump because the veins scored the internals really bad. then from all the metal floating around my vavles stuck which bunred down the tranny. so that was a bad deal. i don't know if your going to do this yourself or having a mechanic do it but whoever does it make sure that they check the valves. its aluminum valves in an aluminum valvle body so the will stick really easy. and the valves are pretty small so that doesn't help any. a big question is how long has the tcc (tourqe converter clutch) been slipping for. if it has been for a while its probly junk and your going to need a new tourque converter which aren't cheap. if it has been i'm sure theres a bunch of clutch material all over the place so i would recomemed a pan drop and filter change. just to be on the safe side. i would anyways. i hope this answers your question. if you have any more just let me know. good luck.

Nate, Thanks!! I really appreciate you chiming in on this. I am entertain doing this myself. How difficult is this on a scale from 1 to 10? 1 being brake pads and 10 being complete engine rebuild. And what specialty tools are needed if any? I consulted a trans guy on this and he thought it necessary to pull the tranny to do the job. If I can access the pump as you say this may be possible for me to do. Again, thanks for your help.

no problem. it shouldn't be to hard. i give it a 3-4. you don't have to pull the trans cause i have had the pump off a couple of times for different things with my tranny. all you really need is a engine support. you have to pull the tranny mount. make sure the support is able to screw up and down so you can lower the side. it makes it a lot easier to get the side cover off. a side cover seal installer would be nice but you don't need it. thats about it for any special tools. its easiest to just pull the sub frame. its only 6 bolts, the ball joints, and 2 bolts for the rack and pinion. you don't have to but it makes a lot more room. one thing to watch out for is the shift solenoids. there right out in the open and the cover hits them. i broke one of mine cause of that and didn't realize it until i ran it on the hoist. that was a bad deal. i'd strongly suggest you check all the valves to make sure there still free and move REALLY easy. i don't know if your planning on getting a book on what all to take off or if your going to ask a tech to print out something. i think i remember what all needs to be done but i'm not positive. oh your also going to need like a 28 or 30mm impact socket to get the axle shaft nut off. i'd order a pump seal bearing and a side cover gasket before you pull it apart to make sure there the right ones. that should be about it. i know it sounds like a lot but once you do it its no problem. you'll be fine. hope this helps. any more questions just ask. good luck.

Nate if you find that you need a Torque Converter there is an offer at e bay itīs from davidautoauction and the tcc are from Yank wich should be hiperformance they are for Cavaliers ans Sunfires 95 and up. Hope itīs only the seal and punp anyway.
