2.2 OHV Transmission Compatibility
Monday, August 01, 2005 3:46 PM
Does anyone know what transmissions are compatible with this engine, and with what modifications? Like i keep seeing this reference to a getrag transmission but when is earch google i dont get any hits.

Also, if i take a 5 speed manual out of a cav/sunfire and take it to a transmission place can they rebuild it with stronger gears etc.

also, if i was to somehow create a miracle and pull off my 300+ horsepower modifications, what would i need to modify in the transmission etc. i know new cv's, but would there be anything else so that my car doesnt randomly eject components.

also, with transmissions, how do u determine wqhat gear ration you should have.

Well, in 1996 cars the 2.2L came with a 5 speed manual (Isuzu design, not the Getrag - that's 2000+), or a 3 or 4 speed automatic (Hydramatic 3T40 or 4T40E)

If the bellhousing was the same, you could put a Getrag in there... but I don't know if they are the same or not.

If you're expecting to get a streetable daily-driver 300hp out of a 2.2L... well, then I wish you luck.

well, actually, im not. i've been researching it, and while the potentials there, it would cost about as much as a new car to pull off.

im just trying to figure out what i can do to this stupid 3 speed so it doesnt suck balls, takes forever to get up to speed

5 speed Getrag swap, your best bet.

Internaly, the trans should be fine, as long as you know how to drive stick....... and dont pull a QBE and do burn outs every chance you get. That tends to make the diff's go SNAP when one tire grabs all of a sudden.

Eh? My buddy Pat has a 95 Z24 with the 4T40E. I had one in my 99.

Or are you referring to the Getrag?? That's 2000+ model years.

The 4T40E and the 3T40 were both available from '96 on, though only a few had the 4T40E the first few years(the LS Sedans).

As far as the mods to the 3T40/TH125C read this by Event:http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=41&i=1893&t=1893&arch=1#1893

Allot can be done with the 3T40, and allot of support is available for it, you just have to do some research.
