Trany knock? *long read*

First things first ... if this topic belongs in another fourm, mods please move it.

Second ...

I bought a ATI (auto trans interceptor) sometime in April of 2005. Everything worked great, 50% levels ... perfect, up until about 2 - 3 weeks after the install. I have a 4T40E transmission in a 2002 Cavalier Coupe w/ a 2200 2.2L engine. When I started up the car I hear a knocking, thought nothing of it because when I put the car in gear it went away. After about a week or so, I asked my gf's step-dad about the knocking. So we started the car, we heard this knocking. Used the screwdriver technique to see if we could hear anything bad, nothing sounded unusual. I went to the local parts store and asked the guy if he knew anything about cavalier's and being a nice guy that he is, he went outside and took at look at it. He said to use a thicker oil and the knock will still be there but not as "noisy". I was kinda hesitant about putting thicker oil in the cav (I normally use 10w). Me and he step dad took a look at the car again, and the Tensioner pulley was wobbling like a mo fackie, so we replaced that thinking that was causing the knock. Started the car up again and the knocking was still there. I had then realized that since the install of the ATI I have not disconnected my battery to clear my codes and have the computer recognize the changes. So we unhooked the battery for about 15minutes, reconnected everything. The knocking was still there

I decided to take it to the GM dealership and have them run a diagnostics on there. They ran the diagnostics and said that they were led to believe that my transmission was going bad but since they seen the ATI it wouldn't be under warranty, so if I went to another dealership w/o the ATI it would be under warranty. Now with that said, I took my uninstalled my ATI, started up the car and no more knock. WHY IS THIS!!! I have been asking around and nobody can come up with a strait forward answer. So, I decided to make a topic out of it.

Sorry for the long read and I hope I do come up with an answer or at least an explanation for this cause. By the way, the knocking was more like a ticking sound, and from my knowledge they are the same thing.

Thank you very much in advance,

dan

It definately sounds like a loose torque converter. Check your bolts that hold the converter to the flexplate. You dont even need to take the tranny back out. Just pull the inspection plate. Put threadlocker on them.

Now after reading the full post I think that your bolts are too long and botteming out on the new torque converter causing it to be loose. You can either buy shorter bolts for it or use a couple washers to space them out enough to clear the converter housing.
