hey guys,
I have a '98 sunfire gt, 2.4L, with a five speed getrag. I have recently got a slight shuddering underneath, and have determined that the main shaft it loose, where the boot is and there is play on the shaft up and down, and left and right. I am not quite sure what exactly this shaft is called, i know it's not the left cv shaft on the left side of the tranny, its the shaft coming out of the passenger side of the tranny. I can't find the part anywhere, want to know if anyone knows what this part is called, and if it's a relatively easy replacement or what. thanks,
blksunfir
Does it look like this-
Its called an intermediate shaft (and sometimes a jackshaft).
If you didnt swap in a getrag transmission, you dont have one.You have an isuzu. The only shaft coming out of the transmission is the axle. The isuzu doesnt have an intermediate shaft like the picture above. If you have play left and right and up and down, you most likely have a bad wheel bearing.Does the car make a howling type noise that gets louder as you go faster?

Eh... the Isuzu (95-99) usually has that intermediate shaft on 95-97 years only.
It's the other way around.... 00-05 (Getrag) don't have it.

Ill verify that on the 98, i dont have an intermediate shaft one mine, just the two axles. The part with the boots as you describe is the right axle, and it could be the cv joint going bad or like said above, the wheel bearings.
