2002 Auto tranny clunk when shift
Sunday, November 27, 2005 12:10 AM
Hello,

I have a 2002 Ecotec Cavalier (automatic), whenever the car shifts into 2nd or 3rd I hear a clunking noise(normal shift, not even punching it), it seems like its coming from the engine, maybe the motor mounts gone bad?

Any ideas, thanks

BTW, the car has 27,000 miles

More than likely the lower torque arm (lower motor mount, "dogbone") is worn out.
Replace it with a stock replacement one for a soft, stock type ride or get one of the polyurethane mounts for better torque transfer( at the expense of more motor vibration transferred to the chasis).
The way to check this is to have some one shift the tranny back and forth, from reverse to neutral and drive and see if the motor rocks excessively, expecially the watch the lower mount.
