Putting Isuzu 5-speed back together...
Friday, July 07, 2006 5:56 AM
I'm putting my Isuzu 5 speed back together, and I am having a little bit of trouble. I have all the barrels, pins, and rollers in the right places on the shift fork shafts, but for some reason my 5th/reverse shafts won't slide. Has anyone run into this? I am going to haul it back apart tonight.

I just paid $25 for a 1-year subscription to alldataDIY.com for my car. This site is awesome, gives step by step instructions for disassembling the tranny with diagrams and dimensions of all the pins and everything. I will check the site's policy to see if I can post these or not.

Mine didn't slide right until I put the outer case on

Yeah, I put the outer case on and it wouldn't shift to 5 or R. However, I just noticed in the diagram that the detent pin in the 5th gear shaft is 12mm, while the 3/4 shaft is 13mm. I don't think I noticed them being different lengths, so I might have put them in the wrong shafts. I will check when I get home from work.

That was it, wrong holes! 1mm makes all the difference.

Where are these Pins ? In the shafts themselves or the Tranny Housing under the Shifter Shaft Plate.
Having the same problem with 5th & Reverse...

There are fatter barrel-like pins, look like tic-tacs, under the plate. Then, there are smaller diameter, longer pins in the shafts themselves. These barrels and pins act almost like dominoes; a detent in one shaft pushes a barrel which pushes a pin through the next shaft, which pushes the next barrel and so on.

There is one shaft which makes the corner, i.e. the shafts are not all in a straight line. The pin that passes through this shaft is shorter than the other. I believe one is 12mm and the other 13mm.

...there is also a barrel in the piece that ties the 5th/reverse shaft together, up higher. This barrel keeps both shafts from moving at the same time, as the detents in the shaft have to be lined up in order for the piece to slide. I will e-mail you some diagrams.
