1998 cavalier, manual, 2 door, 2200 engine

after i get up to 3rd gear and stop accelerating a clicking comes from the transmission. the new wheel hub didnt work (although it was needed). i used a noise listener and when i probed the transmission it got real loud. Is there any way to check fluid in there on a manual transmission? would putting in a heavy oil in help? i can provide more information if needed. i just dont want to end up buying a new transmission.
