A Weird kind of Knock
Sunday, February 25, 2007 12:59 PM
The problem I'm having is this:

At an Idle, in neutral, clutch out, there is a very odd knocking sound. It's not very loud, and I can only hear when I'm idling, so I don't know if it does it in gear while moving (my exhaust is a bit loud). Anyway, it's been doing it for years, as long as I had the car. It can't be the clutch, because it did it when I had the OE Clutch, it did it while I have the Clutch Masters stage 1, and it still does it now when I have a stage 3.
Any help here would be much appreciated. If you need more information about the problem, let me know.
Thanks for any help.

give a little more info, does it grind going into any gear, have you checked the gear oil. jack up the car get under it while its running and try to pin-point where the noise is coming from, and have a trustworthy friend rev the engine while under the car and see if its more noticable then, it may not even be the trans.

No, it doesn't grind in any gears, well except reverse when I'm not thinking and I don't put in it first, then reverse. Damn Isuzu tranny.
I have not checked the gear oil. Actually, I don't know how to do that.
The noise is coming from the driver side of the engine bay, towards the back. As for revving it, uh, my exhast is a bit loud. I can't hear the engine when I hit the gas.... Ooops. Also, the knock isn't all that loud I hear it because I am listing for it. If I don't listen for it, I can't hear it.

more than likely it is the TOB. They can be loud. Yes even new. Is your AC on? If so turn it off and listen. Then while idling push the clutch in, the noise should go away or not be as loud.

I never use my AC. What is a TOB? And yes, when I push in the clutch the noise goes away.

TOB, thorw out bearing. Truly I would not worry about it unless you are having issues. I have had one make a noise for over a 100k (miles).

throw out bearings make a whirring, granting,or grinding sound that occurs when the clutch is depressed and stops when the pedal is fully released

Yeah ok. They will make a noise that most will think is a knocking like noise. Also they usually do it (on J-body's at least) when the clutch is fully released, and goes away when you press the clutch in.
