Does anyone else have a problem w/missing 2nd gear in their getrag? I thought it was because the throw was so long but someone recently told me there was a rpm lockout on this trans. The only reason I question this is because it doesn't always do it

DUDE!!!
I am so shocked that this came up. I bet that you are having this problem when shifting @ 6000RPM huh? As far as I know there is no lockout. It is how you are shifting your car with a warn clutch. I have the same problem that I did not have before!
New Picture comming this summer.
I shift @ redline right before it bounces off the limiter @ 6450 rpm but is that supposed to be warm clutch or worn clutch? I'm lost, never heard of a warn clutch. My supervisor's 2003 Corvette does this but its because of a rpm lockout, or so he says.

Buddy you are shifting @ the wrong RPM. You are shifting after your power band. And yes, I said warn out. When you cannot shift into gear, that means that the syncros are not lined up.

ok so where's the end of the powerband? I thought it was like @ 5600 rpms. Should I be shifting @ the peak of the powerband or @ the end of it?

@ the peak. Where you no longer have power. Right at the point where you loose it. Depending on your mods, around 6000 rpm.
To find out for sure, you will have to dyno your car.

The problem is not clutch related.
The problem is in the synchronizer assembly.
The job of the synchronizer is to spped up or slow down the input shaft to match the spped of the gear you are shifting into.
If they are worn out, or just poorly designed, they will be less able to do this quickly. This is worse at higher RPMs because there is more momentum to overcome.
Its pretty typical for J trans to be hard to shift at high RPM no matter what.

u need to shift near redline so the rpms dont drop too low in the next gear, believe it or not, its actually does help even though its far outta the powerband. the gain you see from having the rpm's higher starting out in the next gear out-weighs the time its outta the powerband in the previous gear.
z yaaaa that's what I was taught from the time I started driving & protomec I didn't think it was clutch related but these syncro's suck big donkey balls, I have had to have my entire transmission rebuilt once & they were one of the major areas of concern. The previouse owner either raced the car all the time or else just couldn't drive a 5-speed worth crap.
So is there anything I can do to fix this temporarly. I plan on sending the trans to IPT to have it crynotreated as soon as I save up enough to have it done.
