4T60 swap into 1st gen with V6?

I'm looking at replacing the 3-speed auto in my 1986 Cimarron with a 4T60. It already has the original 2.8L V6, so no engine swapping issues. 25Mpg just ain't enough anymore with today's gas prices.

you should be able to do it. maybe look into the 440T4. not electronically controlled. i'm currently swapping a 4T65E in my 94 Z24.

A 4T60 isn't electronically controlled. And if I'm not mistaken, is pretty much the same thing as the 440T4.

The 4T60-E is electronically controlled though.

4T60 and 440T4 are the same thing, neither electronically controlled, and a 1994 Z24 isn't a first generation J car either.

But it's nifty that the 4T65E can be shoehorned into a second generation J car.

The main concern I'd have with the 4T60 or 440T4 swap in my Cimarron is whether or not the original axles will work and if the electronic speedometer sensor will fit. Another possible gotcha is if the speedometer drive gear in the transmission has the same number of teeth.

But before I even do anything like buying a transmission, I need to get my @#%%#^$ digital instrument panel fully fixed or find a good replacement. "Mr. Whizard" up in Canada mostly cured it of going off in really hot weather but he fouled up the odometer so it just says Error, and the trip meter still resets itself whenever it feels like.

I dunno if this car is worth all the trouble. I bought a beater of a 1987 Cimarron because it had the 1986-1988 style front end in great shape. (My 86 has an 85 nose on it.) The headliner fabric is coming loose and the sunvisors won't stay up. Also, some stitching needs redone on the driver's seat cushion and a couple places on top of the rear seat back. The other thing needs fixing is the driver's door an old lady backed into. I have a perfect replacement door.

I'm thinking of selling both cars for whatever I can get, then buying something a lot less "esoteric" that's at least a decade newer and already includes a 4 speed automatic.
