i drive a 1996 cavalier Z24 manual transmission, just to clarify.
On my way home, i stopped at a four-way and then proceeded thru. i drove thru 1st and I shifted into 2nd(i'll admit a little hard) and it felt like it didn't all the way down. I slowly let off the clutch and i was still in 1st. tried several times will coasting home to shift to 2nd, 3rd, etc. and i couldn't go into any gear. i was able to to move the gear stick up and down but not side to side. i suspected the cable linkage so i took the center console out and checked things there. everything was fine there, so i follow the cables to were they connect to the tranny. the cable ends were not broke and no visible damage. it does feel like i am able to move into gear at the tranny, but not easily. i can not move the into neutral before i can change to another gear. i had my wife watch the gear stick as i moved the it at the tranny and it did move, so the cable is ok.
any one know what is messed up?

If the cables are still in the brackets on the tranny its probably the shift forks inside the transmission.
I just cant drive 55
thanks, i was hoping it was something easier than that. looks like i'll be doing some research to see if i can fix this myself, hopefully without having to buy another tranny
