how often do cables break? please help

i have a 98 cavalier z24 with the isuzu tranny. i had the diff replaced and the clutch too. then two weeks after the repair it gets jammed in first gear. the guy who did the work says its the cables not his work? he say everytihng is fine till you put the cables on so it must be the cables. i think he did something wrong inside and it screwed up? I had it towed ot another shop it came unstuck and he was drving around but then t got stuck again in first of course.
please any help i really need it the towing bills are adding up.

remove the shift cables from the transmission, adn try moving the shifter around inside the car. if it binds up, then one of the cables is screwed up. with the cables still off the tranny, shift it in and out of all the gears. if it goes in and out fine, then again, shift cables. but my buddy bent a shift fork, or soemthing to that effect, in his sunfire, with the isuzu, so it's possible that the tranny is messed up. they're junk
