Strange Shifting/Clutch Problem?
Saturday, May 17, 2008 12:13 PM
Alright I'm stuck now....My car goes into gear when it wants to and the pedal seems to stay slightly to the floor. I just replaced the whole Clutch Fluid Resevoir that connects to the transmission to the pedal. (maybe its the clutch master cylinder that was replaced. I'm not 100% sure.) What is weird is that when I replaced that stuff the pedal stayed hard until after I shifted a couple gears going down the road and then It wont let it into gear at all. It will not do this however if the car is started and is sitting still, I am able to go through all the gears. Could it be the slave cylinder? Should I just replace the entire clutch? Hopefully someone on here could save me some money or could save me some time with some answers. Thanks

I bled it for like 2 hours today and still no luck..... do you know what else it could possibly be? The pedal stays to the floor.

Could a bad slave cylinder cause this?

are you bleeding it correctly?

was the master replaced in a shop? if so, take it back to them.

if you just replaced something, and this started, i would think it was the recently replaced part. test that 1st, then go from there.

One of my dads friends replaced it. we bled it like crazy and it was fine for a while as long as i pumped it multiple times. After sitting a couple hours the pedal went soft again. This was the reason we replaced the master cylinder in the first place.

so, you replaced the master to remedy the problem, and it did not....correct?

so now you are looking for other possible problems for this?>

If I were you, I would take it to cottman, they often times do free estimates, and are a national chain so you probably have access to one.

from your description, it could be several things that cause this problem. with it retaining fluid, i would tend to rule out the slave....but still possible.
there are other people on here better with trans than myself, perhaps they could diag it a bit further.

Yes that is correct, now I'm just looking for alternative routes. I will get the car to a shop if I can get it to drive there. Thanks for the help John. If you or anyone else can think of something else it might be please let me know. Thanks

either you have a leak in the lines somewhere (unlikely if you replaced the whole thing)

or the slave (aka clutch actuator) is bad. the bad news is the only way to get to it is to pull the trans

getting to a shop should be no prob. as long as you can get it to take off in 1st for the rest of the gears just rev match and don't use the the clutch. as far as help with the problem i would say have it checked out them replace the part yourself if you are able cause it will save you a good bit that way.
