It started with a whining sound I could hear when accelerating this morning on the way to work, this afternoon on the way back home my tranny is only working in second, no down shifting or upshifting, not even manually
(I thought the tranny was fried). I let the car parked for a couple of hours and tried again and it seems to shift perfectly, firm shifts and tires burning on take off ...no whining sound, maybe because it is cold and the tranny fluid gained viscosity?? BTW itīs a Z-24 1996 auto trans with the AutotransInterceptor set on max. since two year ago. What should I do, run a scanner? Change trans. fluid and filter? any input will be really appreciated.
take the AutotransInterceptor off try that
8 psi with m62 and IAT under 100
I tend to start by changing the trans. fluid and filter. Tried the car at night for some 30 minutes, start, stop, upshifting, downshifting, hiway, etc... in somehow cold weather and it worked normally. My mechanic friend is worried to put new trans. fluid he said it may be better to filter the old one and reuse it ?? I think brand new trans fluid is the way to go, or am I wrong at that? If the car acts up on me again I may try that Cody since it is so easy, thanks.
Done with the fluid and filter change, no issues today, btw we put new trans. fluid about 9 quarts. Hope that was it
Well sorry to bring it back, but issues came back. After two days working properly suddenly going about 60mph the tranny jumped to neutral till the car slowed down then it engaged in second and stayed in 2nd. so I had to get home at some 35mph. The curious thing is the tranny doenīt feel sliping, it grabs ok but suddenly it desengages all speeds but second. I did disconnect the Interceptor but still same thing, it must be something else. I will try scaning to see if it shows any clue, any help will be much appreciated...
My tranny was fried, I tried pushing the car to its limits and the winning sound came louder and clearly from the transmission it also started missing the changes. So after checking around prices to rebuild or replace decided to get a rebuilt one from the dealer, problem solved after some $2000 ! Just hope it will last some +10 years like the oem did.
I probably go overboard, but I change transmission fluid and filter every year on my two automatic cars (TH125c and TH440) . Drain and refill the manual transmission in my '99 Cavalier every year also. Doesn't cost much, and keeping that maintenance schedule with a good working transmission that isn't abused should see many miles.
