99 sunfire 2.4L manual Trans Problem
Sunday, December 20, 2009 4:59 PM
I had my transmission go out on me a couple weeks ago. The symptoms after it went out was that the clutch would engage and the trans would spin but it wouldn't put any power to the wheels. I knew the trans was spinning because the vehicle speed sensor was reading and going up as you hit the gas, and there was a sound inside the tranny that sounded like a marble being bounced around in a glass jar. Also when i put the car in gear and jacked the front end up both wheels spin freely. I just got a used tranny and installed it with a new oem clutch, flywheel and cv axles. it is doing the exact same thing. with the front end up in the air and the car in gear the front wheels spin freely, when you turn the car on and engage the clutch there is no power to the wheels or axles. Also it has the same noise of something rattling around in the trans and the vehicle speed sensor reads speed as you accelerate. I am thinking its the differential because the trans is spinning but nothing past that is getting power. I am really confused on what is going on. Please help.

gotta be the throw out bearing or you need to bleed the system...

Okay first off to be sure you understand your differental is inside your transmission, if your spider gears are shot ( which is your differental )your wheels will spin but no power applied to the wheels.

The noise you hear, is that noise present with the vehicle started and it neutral, or only when you engage/disengage your clutch.

The reason being, if the noise is present, with the clutch disengaged than it is in the transmission, if the clutch is engaged than most likely your clutch is the problem.

A throwout bearing will make a noise, right you press the clucth, and right when you release it.

Also to be clear are you saying that with the vehicle in gear, front wheels chocked up, they dont spin at all and the axles arent spinning they just stay stationary, as if no power is applied to them. In neutral do they spin at all?

If your axles are stationary in gear, than your issue could be either transmission or clutch, if the clutch isnt holding the input shaft of the trans isnt going to spin, if the input shaft isnt spinning, guess what, the output shaft ( spider gears) arent going to spin, so no axle spinning.

Did you use a clutch alignment tool during install?

Did you torque your flywheel bolts.

Are you sure the pressure plate and clutch disc are installed correctly.

OK i think i am using the wrong terminology. First off when i have the front end jacked up and I put the car into first gear (like you would when you park your car to hold the car) the wheels spin freely, or to explain it differently, I had the key out of the ignition and the car in 1st gear and the wheels spin freely like when the car is in neutral. They are not holding the car like they are supposed to. Also when i start the car and let the clutch pedal out in 1st gear (whether the front end is jacked up or on the ground) the cv axles are not spinning and I hear a rattling sound in the transmission. Yes we used the clutch alignment tool and yes the clutch assembly is torqued down correctly and installed correctly. My friedn who has been a certified mechanic for 10 years did the install with me. He had done about 2 dozed trans installs and never seen this happen before. I think that there is a problem between the trans and the differential. The reason why is because when i have the car on and in 1st and let the clutch out I feel it engaging and my speedo goes up it's just the cv axles don't move and thus the car doesn't move. This also happens in all gears 1-5 and r. And lastly no the noise is not present when the car is running in neutral ti acts normal in neutral so I knwo the clutch is working correctly. Thanks alot.

Sounds like the diff is gone, in both transmissions. Only way to know for sure is to take 'em apart!
