1993 3.1 with TH125 doesn't like it's new owner...slipps in all gears

Just bought a 1993 Cavalier today. 3.1, with the 3 speed auto. 093,xxx miles. When I picked it up, it seemed like there was a bit of slippage, but I wrote it off to being unfamiliar with the car.

After 15 miles or so, it started to slip fairly bad.....to the point where I couldn't maintain 60MPH anymore. When I slowed to 45, I manually shifted into 2nd.....still slipped. I rolled to a stop, only to find it slips in 1st gear as well.

I let the car cool down (hoping the seller had duped me into a hot problem) but no, it seems as if I have a definate slippage problem.

If I put the car in gear, the car will not move, but it is attempting to go into gar. If I rev the motor, you can feel the car attempting to move. Does the same in reverse.

Pulled the dipstick, the oil is light tan, and wayyyy over full (past the bent part of the dipstick....)

Any thoughts?

Try to get your money back. ATF is not suppose to be tan. My best guess is that the tranny is cooked.

its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa

yes unfortuantely you got snookered, hope you didn't pay too much for the car. Always have a car checked out by a mechanic and if the seller refuses then walk away. You can find a good used tranny at http://www.car-part.com/ go for the lowest mileage one you can find that's not too far from you.

I guess its not a big deal. I buy and sell cars on the side. Cant win 'em all I guess. Only paid $600.....I figured it was a clean car and basically I was buying an odometer....

I have an app on my phone that constantly searches for cars under $1000. I live about an hour north of Milwaukee, so I find cars to the north of me, buy 'em, and resell them to the Milwaukee area again. Been going pretty good so far.....just seems I've hit a snag as of lately (3 in a row that are very problematic!)

I have found a trans with 73k on it about 30 minutes away, so I guess I will go snag it.

How bad is it to drop a trans in one of these. Never done a Cavalier before.....

This How To might be of some help even though it's for swapping a manual in.

Could always try a filter and fluid change topped off to proper level. TH125's biggest problem was the torque converter not unlocking, otherwise pretty reliable transmissions.
