Ive got a hell of a problem.
I have a 1998 cavalier with a 5 speed manual, one of my shift cables busted. The one that rotates the selector shaft, not moves it up and down)
I do not know what transmission i have, and i need to know it so i can buy the correct cables (there are two options for these years MJ1 or MK7) The vin says the car is a 3 speed automatic. The engine is a 2.2L from a 1996 cavalier (judging by the ignition system and crankshaft position sensor) I purchased the car in this shape.
Ive searched the transmission and found no tags on the outside to tell me what transmission it might be. Can anyone tell me if there is another way to ID it without removing it from the vehicle?
can anyone help?
Tom
Type your VIN into www.compnine.com and it will tell you what RPO codes the car was built with.
The only difference between the MJ1 and MK7 is the housing bolt pattern and the gearing, the shifter mechanism on the two transmissions are identical, so they should use the same shift cables.
That being said Rockauto specifies two different part numbers, so you're better off safe than sorry. If you have the 2.2L OHV you have an MK7 transmission.
I'd be interested to know what the difference is with the cables, because even the shifter in the center console are the same between the two cars.
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
I checked all over the transmission and found a very sad scrap of tag left that had 61UBB on it... after some looking i found it to be a Isuzu MK7. The difference in the shift cables has something to do with how they brace on the transmission i believe. The pictures ive seen show a different looking retainer that would snap into the bracket for them.
I did try to run my vin Mr. Lenko, sadly this car is a bastard child someone has torn appart and rebuilt, it was a 3 speed automatic with power locks/windows/mirrors from the factory... now its a 5 speed manual with power nothing.. Its got a 1996 ignition/computer in it... yet the vin tags for the door and dash line up with one i found stuck to the trunk lid showing the car as a 1998 (which matchs my title) The only option ive found that remained are the colors (inside and out) and the ABS.
I would suspect the car had been owned by someone on here but its in to poor of shape for that... If i didnt have a soft spot for them id have probably let it go to the scrap yard when the connecting rod let go and i had to replace the motor.
like was said above doesn't matter both shift cables will interchange. my 2.4 ones went to a 2200
JBO since July 30, 2001
i belive the two styles differ inside the car. in some cars the cables mount at the same position on the shifter base and some the offset. i had a problem with mine like that.
