Not sure about this issue, but I figured i would throw it out there incase anyone has ran into something like this before......the trans(5spd) is getting stuck in 2nd gear (as strange as it may sound) when trying to engage reverse. Once the trans is locked in 2nd, the shifter itself will not physically go into any other position except reverse and even when in reverse position the car is still in 2nd. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does I get really annoyed. Each time it happens I have to remove the intake/airbox and access the top of the transmission where I remove four 12mm bolts holding down a cover, I then use a screw driver to re-align the "plates" then put everything back. After reassembly the care will freely shift in all gears like it should.
Anyone know of a way to fix this permanently? ...sort of replacing an otherwise good trans? I have gotten the fix down to a five minute job but I would really like to find a solution rather than a fix.
thanks!

I would check the cables. might be a kink or something. The cables that run from the shifter to the transmission.

If it is not the cables, it is possible that it is internal to the transmission. There are pins in between the shift rails that keep 2 gears from being engaged at the same time. If even one of the pins gets hung up, it can create problems with gears getting stuck and other things like that. It is hard to say. If the transmission is suspect, you can always get another from a junkyard for less than 200 bucks.
We rebuilt a trani for my sisters cav and it had the exact same issue as your talking about. We tried changing cables and it did not help. It turned out to indeed be trani problems. Not saying you should not first try another set of shifter cables but it sounds like you need another transmission
