Hi all, as you can see this is my first post on the J-body forums.
I had a friend (evofire) refer me here saying that he was aware of j-body guys that were up to 500WHP on there 4T45E's without issues.
I've blown my 4th transmission at this point and I'm at my whits end. I want to know if there really is a way to build this trans up to hold that much power because I seem to go threw them every couple months.
I have a 07 Cobalt LS auto, Fully bolted, Fully built, with GT2860RS turbo Running E85/91 tune around 18PSI... Only around 350WHP or so I'm assuming at the moment.
I've had my trans built locally twice and by IPT and nothing seems to work. Anyone have any ideas or know of anyone who has the ability to build these transmissions legitimately?
Pictures just because I'm a nub to this forum

We have 4T40Es. They share some parts, but the 4T45E have different bell housings.
Read this post.
Click me for tons of info.
450ish seems to be when most 4T40E fail. i would assume that 4T45E's would fail around there also. The HP isn't what kills them it is the torque.
Also, is your trans "tuned" with HPTuners or Trifecta? I hope you have a high stall converter also with that much power.

Well yes, I know it's the torque... which is probably slightly under where the WHP is, And I also knew you guys have the 4T40E's. They're very similar though...
It was tuned with trifecta a long time ago. Now it's tuned with HPT. I don't have a high stall on it, but I never launch the car anymore either.
Thanks for the info I will read over it

hmmm. Well looks like that was all IPT parts with substituted blue clutches... And I even had IPT actually build my trans. So I know that won't work again.
Thanks anyways.

So.....can you email me your HPTuners file so I can review and compare to mine. Also if you have a "stock" tune I can look at, or I'll just download one from the repository.

Will do. I'll have to get it from my tuner.

Good to see you over here trying to fix the beast Tyler! My car should be ready this week sometimes, lets get these girls rolling again!!!
Seriously man... I can't wait for the day where I can drive her again. and the day when I can stop saying that last sentence.... lol

For sure dude. Atleast its summer and shes not down during the good times of year. With my new clutch in, ill be tearing up the street again soon. Hopefully Courtney feels the same way she did prior to the trans swap.
That's very true...
Sorry MD enforcer, I'm still meaning to send you the tune, still trying to get it from my tuner though.

SMG Motoring has a built 4T45e trans in their Cavalier drag car, pretty sure they are a supporting vendor over on CSS.net.
Perhaps give them a shout and see what they are doing.
Those guys are very knowledgeable.
Yup I have talked to them about their trans before actually. They didn't want to give out any of there secrets at all as to what all they did when I asked them lol.
I actually know they guy who ended up buying it off of them too. Ironically he never got the trans to work properly... Even after disabling all of the torque management and torque abuse, whenever his car would begin to spin tire the trans would immediately bring the power down so it would stop...
I felt bad for him casue he never got to finish the car and ran out of funds.

Are you talking about Ben and his red cavalier, or the guy with the black cobalt.
I know been never got his to shift right, and I never heard more from the cobalt guy. I think he was from Michigan as well.

Guy with the black cobalt. I think he ended up selling it actually to a guy over in England.

I wish it was easy do a 5 sp swap and just be done with it. bleh.

So, why haven't you switched over to the 4T65E trans? Since they make the adapters so you can swap it into a cobalt...

Yeah I've seen this... there's a lot of @!#$ you would have to do to it though. and the car wouldn't be smog-able anymore either because of it so it wouldn't be street legal.
Trifecta Dealer of Phoenix
Oh, it would pass emissions here in Ohio, but they just check VIN and if you have and check engine lights.

Yeah theyre strict dick nuggets here

i know lots of people with motor swaps tyler. a trans swap is no big deal. they would never even know you swapped the trans probably. as long as you took all the step to MAKE is SMOG legal, then i dont see the issue.
in arizona, if you have no check engine lights, and the VIN under the windshield matches the VIN on the paper you are good as far as i know...
Negative... One of the guys at Bobs shop looked at the build book that I brought them for that and he said it wouldn't be smogable at all. Also Maven said so in one of the forums on CSS, plus I don't want a 3 Speed... @!#$ that noise. I'm trying to talk to ZZP to see what there 4t65e is all aboot.

lol thats funny I talked to Steve about it yesterday when I picked up Courtney. He agreed with me that the trans mission has NOTHING to do with smog at all.
Did he look over the build books transmission at all though?
IDK to be honest I'm trusting that shop less and less with saying one thing and another all the time and their lack of getting work done right the first time.
