What rim/tire combo wont slow me down?
Saturday, July 30, 2005 12:26 PM
I was curious of what i am shopping for. I have an entirely stock 03 cav... and i have a connection to get rims/tires at cost pricing. But i dont wanna get rim that are so heavy they slow me down...

SO basically, what am i looking for that wont slow down my stock cav? What size? weight? what style/brand of rubber?

Id hate to buy rims....and then have them slow me down... seems like such a waste

thanks alot!

I had the optional aluminum stock 15", 195/65-15 on my sunfire when I ran in the 16.2-16.5 range.
I upgraded to 17" wheels and 225/45-17 tires and now I'm running 16.5-16.7 range.

My 60' times are about 0.2 seconds slower with the 17's.

I'm guessing the stock BFG Touring T/A 195/65-15 is around 21lbs. I'm not sure about the rim weight.

...my new setup is...
17x7.5 Kosei K1 Racing rims - 16.7lbs
225/45-17 BFG KDW2 (NT) tires - 24lbs

I prefer autocross and daily driving over drag racing. I'm very happy with my setup and I wouldn't change a thing. The half second slower quarter mile and 0.2 second slower 60' acceleration isn't at all noticable... and I'm a lot faster in SOLO2. So wheels and tires can slow you down and make you faster at the same time. It depends on where you want the speed. ...my stopping distance is also shorter and the new tires are less prone to lock up under heavy braking. ....one more note... spinning sideways at 70mph is not good - thank god for stiff sidewalls.
