painting z24 wheels
Thursday, September 22, 2005 4:44 PM
hey guys i have a black 97 z24 with the five spoke wheels. I am thinking about painting them black. I cannot find anywhere to have them powdercoated so i was wondering if there are any other ways i could go about painting my wheels. I think there is some sort of rim paint. If you could tell me what you did if you painted your tires black or any other color that would be great and some pics could only make it better... thanks a bunch

Well i was skeptical about it, but the Wheel Coating at Auto Zone and AAP is what i used.. I only used 2 cans of color(not a whole 2 cans tho) and a can of clear. The color is graphite.. and i love it. They look good in anylight.. and in the sunlight just the metallic looks so good. While i was painting them they first looked like a medium gray which i wasnt expecting and kinda disappointed.. but i baked them in the paint booth and let them set over night and came back next morning and they got dark.. i loved them so much. The can says to let the paint cure for a couple days but i baked them in our paint booth for like a total of 20min(10min increments) so that really shortened the curing time. I also wetsanded the wheels down with 400 before paint..
Here is a pic of the can i got of color

for only $20 it was the best mod i could think of doing.. not alot of exterior mods for $20 make so much of a difference in appearance.

I like the dark on the stock wheels Its very different, I am kind of going with a dark look to my car and I am thinking of doing that to my wheels however I cant help but wonder just how durable painting the rims would be, even if you do a good prep job? anyone had painted rims a while? I know people who have done it but I guarantee they did half ass work. Also any rough ideas on powder coating cost for four wheels?

I was thinking about doing this too. Is there a step by step process some where on here that i can follow? Like how many coatings? Is there a different base or top clear coat? How should i prep the wheels? Sorry for all the questions but i am a newbi in this area.

Could somebody with painted rims give me a idea as to the durability of painted rims, someone with more than 6 months of having them painted?

Just my opinion, but I dislike the painted look, looks like some steelies on there, althought I am biased, I have never liked black rims on a car other than on a black car, althought even taht needs a polished lip to look good, just my 2 cents

FYI I found an powder coat shop nearby and they told me $200.00 to blast and powder coat all 4 wheels....I dont know for sure but that seems pretty good to me

mine have been done for like 2 years almost, theyre going through their second canadian winter and look perfect pretty much still. Just the edges arent perfect from teh tire machine. And I dont wash my car much in teh winter either so they get DIRTY!

^^ he is the one who really got me to like em.. had to email me to request a pic of his. Also Sac and Marc's 2k Z wheels made me really like the darker wheels.. then i saw Spotobee(sorry for spelling it wrong) had his Z wheels painted and i wanted to do them even more.. i've gotten alot of compliments on them definatly.. nice way to spice up the stock wheels and add a new look.
