Bad to store Rims/Tires in minibarn?
Monday, March 20, 2006 11:00 AM
Just wondering if it would hurt my rims or tires at all to store them in my minibarn. It is completely sheltered from the weather, but the temperature is uncontrolled. It can get pretty hot in the summers and very cold in the winter. I'm not to worried about the rims, but would it have any effect on the tires at all?

not anything different than if they were on the car

who cares about the summer, are you not using them then?

as for winter, i'd wonder if the rubber could get a flat spot. no real clue though

No, I'm not going to leave them on this summer. I do store them in the winter, but I always had left them in my garage which is insulated and stays between 60-80 all year. Could they get a flat spot laying on their side, and should I deflate them at all?

No just stack them on their sides. when i did mine they were in my room but i put each one in a garbage bag. just cuz i wanted to. but as far as the temp change its no different that leaving them on your car and driving them year round. I cleaned mine very well before they were put away, waxxed them and everything all nice up.

it's actually a fair bit different. if you leave them on and drive them all year, they aren't sitting on the same spot year round without moving. in this case, he wants to store in a barn, probably lying on their side, and possibly stacked.

i'm not an expert, so don't take my suggestions as if i know what i'm talking about. but i'd put a nice coat of meguirs premium car wax on the rims, and possibly let a little air out of the rubber, keep in mind they'll lose some naturally though. i took my rubber off so my wheels could be refinished, and i've seen no signs of flat spots

ive done this many times and the results are always the same: everything is fine
just stack them on their side
no need for wax or letting air out
the tires and wheels will be fine
no flat spots, no nothin
tires arent anything like they used to be, so they can sit for some time without any consequences

go ahead and wax them, can't hurt, and it's an extra level of protectant.....otherwise, seems tires should be fine

Only difference I can see is that the minibarn is basically a sauna... which is why I ask about the air. Hot air expands and I don't want them sitting over-inflated. I'll clean them as I always do before storage.

which is why i suggested pulling a bit of air out of them....can't hurt right!

Alright, I'll clean them, bag them, slightly deflate them, and forget it.

some people dont need rims year round, i have 2 sets and my steelies. 1 set for the shows, 1 pair for racing, and 1 pair for winter.

I have 2 sets of rims, winter and no salt on the roads weather. when i put my steelies on i wax and take it off, and tire shine my tires, wipe the excess tire shine off and bag them. then i put them in my room stacked on their sides. no problems at all. they dont get flat spots, or anything, i dont mess with air at all and i did check them once in a while and there was no change, and trust me there was a temp change in my room, especially when your house is 150 years old. so thats how i do it and they are just fine.

^^ stored in your room though, he's talking about a barn where temps can hit probably mid 30's and as low as -30-40

yes my room gets down to 30's no joke thats why i have an electric blanket all winter, you seriously have no idea how cold my room gets, i have had a glass of water freeze over sitting on my desk. no joke. it gets cold, in the winter most of the time i sleep on the couch anyway since my room is so cold.
