It looks like I finally have the cash to purchase the tires I want for the 17"
wheels I have.
I have just two more things to get, one of which is a set of hubcentric rings. WIth my last sets of aftermarket wheels I've never used hubcentric rings but I know my Konigs would always end up shearing a stud when I tried to take the wheels off and I'm guessing it was because there was no hubcentric ring.
So, according to Centerline the Hub Bore of the wheel I have is 72.62mm. When I was looking at hubcentric rings online they came with two different measurements, what kind do I need to fit my application?
Next, lug nuts. I've heard nothing but good things about the McGard SplineDrive lugs but I am worried that they may not fit into the holes in the wheels or even worse, that they are the wrong type. According to Centerline I should use "60 degree tuner lugs," whatever that's supposed to mean. Any ideas?
Oh, and websites I could get these products from for cheap would be helpful as well.
well i know hub rings will take the stress off the studs and center it on the hub. this is why you were shearing off studs because the weight of the rim was centered on the studs. as for the size, im not too positive but search for hub rings and you'll find the size you need.
as for lugs you need 12mm x 1.5mm
^^^Those poly carbon rings are crap form my experiences with them. I would contact Discount Tires Direct for a set of their metal hub rings. The sizes you need to know are 57.1 mm hub diameter and 72.62 hub bore. They'll usually run in the $20 range shipped to your door. As far as the McGard Splinedrives, the will fit just fine. The Splinedrives have a 60 degree conical seat, which is what the person from Centerline that you spoke to was referring to.
Well, see, this is what happened last time I was looking at lug nuts. I ended up on the McGard website looking at two different kits but I couldn't figure out what the difference was.
http://www.mcgard.com/search/default.aspx?PrimNavID=1&NavID=8
Chrome - SplineDrive Clamshell (Cone Seat)
Contains Tuner wheel locks, key, SplineDrive lug nuts, installation tool - (65557CN)
Chrome - SplineDrive (Cone Seat)
Contains SplineDrive lug nuts, Installation Tool, Tuner wheel locks, key, chrome valve stems, & storage pouch - (65557)
Is the only difference between these two the valve stems and storage puch?
And on the topic of hubcentric rings, any reputable places to deal with when looking for some? I don't want to order a part like that from some company I've never heard of.
Discount Tires Direct is a very reputable, nationwide company. I've bought many sets of wheels and tires from them and have never had any problem or complaint. Their website is www.tires.com The only difference between those two lug kits you listed in the clamsell one has a nice fancy case that the lugs come in. Thats it.
DTD I can't order from online. I'd have to call in which I'd kinda rather not do.
And I found the McGard 65557 on Jegs and it says it comes with 12 lug nuts and 4 wheel locks. What's the difference and where are the other 4?
there should be a kit listed which has 16 lugs and 4 locks. The part # on the Jegs site is 65557. The one you are mentioning is 65457.
@!#$ i just had a set of those from DTD that didn't end up fitting my motegi DPK's which pissed me off becuase they said they would even after talking to a rep named Lynn who was a guy... I called him back when i found out they didn't fit.. then says to me we don't carry motegi rims so we "thought" they would fit... I will never order through someone who "thinks" something will fit... @!#$s. If you end up ordering through them the metal rings will be pink. I passed mine off to a local buddy... or i would have been glad to send them your way.

thats for importsAccording to McGards website that's the product number for a Cavalier. Do a make/model search and see for yourself.
I bought a set of wheels, and they came with hub centric rings. They look to be a plastic material though. Will the plastic work or should I buy metal ones? Is there a universal size for all j-bodies or is their a different size for each type of wheel? Is the 57.1 mm the universal j-body hub diameter, and then you have to get the hub bore measurement on your specific wheel?
the plastic ones will work, ive been using them for 4 yrs now. same ones with no problems
Cool......I got free lug nuts with the hub centric rings, too. I'm getting rid of them though because they aren't McGard's. I'm getting the 65557 set.

Same here.
As for calling Discount Tire for rings...if they don't carry your brand of wheels, don't bother calling them. I tried that when I got my wheels. I ended up calling a local shop here in KC and picked them up for $1 a piece.

Yea i finally did that... i called up the wheel company and got their part #. Went to pepboys and had them order them from them and in 2 days i had ones that actually fit the car. Can't wait for some rubber.
I have 17's coming in the mail on monday, are hub centric rings neccessary for all aftermarket rims?

You'll like it. I got that set and it's great. If you don't need to install a wheel I'd go with another kit, though, because it comes with valve stems, too. (Nice looking ones, btw)
My father and I just mounted my tires to my wheels this morning and I just put my wheels on and that is definately a nice set.
(Check P&M later for pics

Yes.
In almost all cases, yes. There are some aftermarket wheels that are hubcentric. I know some are/were available for Honda. Pry zero available for j-bodies.
so how are these rings dfferent from spacers? do they just go around the hub, and not the hub and studs?
Yes, they are designed in different sizes and have a Hub Bore measurment (which is the inside of the aftermarket wheel) and a hub diameter measurement (which is the size of the hub on the vehicle). The ring simply slides over the hub on the car and keeps the wheels from resting their full weight on the studs themselves and instead centers it on the hub, they way the hubs were designed to work.
