Michelin Hydroedges, People's opinions/experiences?
Sunday, October 01, 2006 10:56 AM
Like the title says.. anyone have any experience with these? I DID search and found a few posts but most were basically all the same person(Mat Cacciatore) lol so i was just lookin for more people's opinions on em.

Goin by the Ratings on Tire rack i think these would be a great tire to get overall..
Michelin Hydroedge

Don't mention price being a big problem.. cuz im not worried about the price on these.. I'm more into how well they do in winter, tread life being as good as its said(Treadlife Warranty: 90,000 Miles)

Feel free to mention any experiences you have with them..

Thanks in advance.. btw these are going on stock Z wheels(205/55/16)

they arent too bad. they are smooth and all, but they have alot of flat and large tread blocks, so they arent probably the best for winter. they will handle the slush good because of the large sipes and channels for water displacement, but i tend to lean more towards the harmony as my favourite all season michelin.

if you are looking for something for the winter, get a winter tire. even the @!#$tiest winter tire will outperform the best all season in the winter.

michelin??? buy good year triple treads, they came out with the 3 zone tread design first, and on top of that they look better in my mind, they have the permablack compund that'll keep it looking new, silica compund in the tread(kind of like glass particles in the rubber that enhance traction, and when they wear out create micropockets for enhanced traction) plus an 80,000 mile warranty, which no one can argue with,, i have them on my 05 cavalier in a 195/70R14 and i get a glued to the road feeling. Also think they have a pretty comfortable ride, the only other thing i can think of is the fact that the goodyear has better snow/ice traction than the hydroedge. basically very similar tires except the michelin has 10k more in warranty but the goodyear is gonna have better ice traction.

if you know anything about tires, you will know that a tire that claims to be good in both the winter and the summer is horse @!#$. summer compounds (even "all season") get rock hard in the cold and that doesnt help much at all for the winter.

Personal experience working in a shop has provided me with the experience of Michelin's turning into rock-hard air filled hockey pucks after a few seasons. They don't handle prolonged heat cycling very well, hence why the tread never wears out on old Michelins. Not really a problem for normal abuse summer driving, but cold traction goes out the window on old Michelins. So great treadlife, @!#$ty traction IMO. But hell, brand new anything works great.

ya usually after 3 full seasons they get pretty hard and dry. they make excelent summer tires for that reason though. they handle the dry and wet driving very well, but after a few years they can become very hard.

Go with Goodyear Tripletreads. Read the reviews on Tirerack.

I'm lucky to get tires to last more than 2 seasons, 3 means I'm not driving hard enough .

Goodyear Tripletread r on my Z24. Great tire and good price 156$ Cdn. installed last year. Great until snow is packed on road and then tread does not matter (still better than regular all seasons though).

I have Tripletreads on my Cavy, they are great all around (a lot better than the RS-A's comfort wise, same performance wise).

Ive had the hydroedges for the last 2 years (maybe 3) on my stock 205/55/r16 rims... and they are crap in the winter. Probably doesnt help with it being low profile and wide...

I will be getting 14" steelies and winter tires this year.

How well do you guys think these tires would work on 17" rims in the spring/summer season ? Or do they even make them in the correct size for 17's???

Hydroedge that is.

I have the good year triple treads ojn my 02 Sunfire. On the stock 15 inch wheels. They are great in the rain and on dry ground. They are also a quiet tire and smooth riding. I only had them since June so i don't know how they are in snow.

2002 Sunfire SE, Polo Green, 2.4, 4 Speed Auto,
Sunroof,
Mods: Sony MP3 HU, 6 1/2 kicker speaker in Front Doors, 6 x 8 Pioneer speakers in back,
100 Watt Boozka sub, Remote start and alarm.

I used Michelin Apline winter tires on my Sunfire last winter and they were great. Driving on snow was just like driving on clean road. I don't regret getting them at all.
