I am to the point on my new sub fiberglass sub enclosure where i need to make the sub rings and when i went to our lumber yard all they have is 8' x11' sheets of MDF for $32 and i didnt really wanna spend that much for this one project so does anyone know of an alternative to using the MDF and may save me a lil money this time around?

If you go to LOWES! (i work for them) and ask nicely allot of times we'll have broken MDF oak what ever laying around ask if you can buy it off them I just give it away i sell broke MDF for 10 cents.. I wouldn't reccomend using hardibacker its cement and rather porus and a beotch to cut.. you can use any wood really well let me rephrase that a dense wood. you can buy maple 2ftx2ft for like 4 bucks at lowes or the 4ftx4xft ones for like 10 bucks if im not mistaken..

beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?

I worked at Home Depot in Floor and Wall for years...

We have 1/2" Hardi Backer in the same dept. for around 10.00 per board. The 1/4" stuff is probably around 1.00 cheaper. The only problem is that I don't think fiberglass will soak into HB as well, seeing that it's basically waterproof. Get wood, man.

Home Depot here... worked lumber, overnights, and now hardware

Check with them to see if they have any cull mdf or particle board (Cull = damaged). Also, check for the mdf shelving because usually they will have 3/4" 12" x 96" and maybe other sizes. They should also have some precut sheets of 3/4 and 1/2 inch that are 2' x 4'

I have used some uncoated shelving in place of MDF. It appeared identical to MDF, although it had one rounded edge. I think a 2' x 6' piece was $5.

One of the local lumber yards here usually has misc pieces of wood for dirt cheap. For fun, I bought HDF scraps and built a small sealed cube. Friggin heavy.

I use to work at home depot, too. I worked all over the store.I specialized in lumber, building materials and millwork. Don't use hardibacker. The best thing for you to do is to get mdf that is in the cull cart. That means it has already been marked down. It should be located at the back or front of the lumber/ building materials department. Ask an associate for details. You can get mdf back there for 50 cents, $1 , $2 and $4.0l. Look in the garbage can too and tell the associate you found it there. They will give it to you for free sometimes, depending on the size. You could try sanded bc plywood, but I would stick with cdx. Also, like said above, they have smaller 2x4 sheets. If you have to work on a budget, don't do it. Patience is a virtue. Wait it out until you get the money.

most lowes and hd's that i have been out will sell 2'x4' sections of mdf as well. they may even have 2'x2' check the aisles. its usually near the floor stacked vertically in a bin. around where like the wood mouldings and various sized wood pieces such as like 1"x1" x8' and such.
