FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP

Hey guys I just finished fiberglassing the dash with one layer of fiberglass and resin and it looks sweet right now. How many layers do i need to do??? 3,4 how many??? thanks

depends how smooth you got it when you laid it, if you are just doing it for looks alone, not doing any customization, 1 layer should be good as long as there is enough mat/resin to be sanded properly.

If you are doing custom stuff, depends how much weight will be placed on it. Doing tvs/new radio etc would need probably 3-6 layers, where as a gauge pod could get by with 1 or 2.

I would assume you are just going for looks, so you could always just lay down more resin to thicken/even it out and then sand it down.

LOL wow this is the same guy that has the fiberglass dash GP. Why do you try to sell stuff that you dont know how to fiberglass and you charge an arm and a leg to do it. I almost got a dash fiberglassed by you guys then I realized that I would be stupid to spend my money when I can do just as good as you guys.

Sorry about this post guys!!! Frank didn't know what was all going on.

First off we can fiberglass the oem dash for a price close to this, but we need your stock dash. I have been working on the interior of someone locally and I thought that I could just sand down the top after taking the material off, but thats not true. There are cracks and pits all over it. So I am going to be fiberglassing it this weekend sometime. If we do sell you a fiberglass dash you will have to tell me if you want: the stock passenger airbag piece or vents covered in fiberglass or not.

Secondly,The paint I am using is just Krylon. I have used it on my own interior with no problems. I put a exterior clear coat on top of the krylon which helps from the paint getting scratched or chipped. If you want a certain brand name paint on it we can do that to, but it will cost you the difference in price thats all. i mean I could get it painted at a Auto Body shop if you want but it will cost more.

If there are anymore Q's post them here.

Thanks,

Damn. Everytime I ask something on here now it becomes a big deal with Frank and Cavalier Extreme. First off the dash looks really good right now but I was just making sure that it was enough layers. I didn't want the dash to crack on the guy or anything. PLus I am doing my own stuff at the same time. I have done a couple of things in fiberglass so far such as....fiberglassing a gauge in a bezel, fiberglassing some of those top pieces of the dash that always crack, and now this dash. All have come out good so far. My bad for trying to make a guys dash good and durable.

Like i said long ago do ONE before you do others fit it make sure it all goes well BEFORE you make a GP.

Who would buy something from you knowing you dont know what is needed or anything. Finsh ONE and test fit it.

sorry herman, they have a good point, you guys are advertising these pieces to sell and you dont know how to properly do them. that looks really bad for someone wanting to buy them.

to answer your question 1 layer will be fine if its not handled allot. but since these are planning on going out to customers, i would put a couple of layers on so you dont have to worry about shipping issues, or customers that do grab the pieces hard, or push on them harder then u might. im sure if u do just one layer you get someone complaining that they cracked their top and that you guys are to blame for doing shoddy work.

yeah well Frank set that up before I even knew what he was doing. I was going to help him do them, after I found out that he was doing it.

But I hear what you guys are saying.

Thanks for the info that everyone has given. I think I will at least add another layer of fiberglass. Its really smooth right now but I think I want it to be stronger.

you guys need to prepare better w/ this company. im sure it will turn out fine. starting up is the hardest part. especially w/ the j community. for the dash i would go w/ 4 layers to be safe.

Sorry that Herman is trying to do his best possible work for our customers.

Hey Herman, finish it up and give it to the customer. Don't even paint it.

thats the best advice ive seen from you yet.....not painting it with your krylon fusion will probably make the customer happier

Well if anyone cares here is how the dash looks right now with only one layer of fiberglass on it.......

oh in case you are wondering the lighter areas are bondo.

Re: FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP

looks like you have some air pockets and such around the edges

Re: FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP
Saturday, June 04, 2005 4:24 AM
Is it just me or Is there NO HOLES drilled to make it sandwich like ?

If not thats why it looks like you can grab an edge and peel it right off.

Re: FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP
Saturday, June 04, 2005 6:09 AM
There are a couple of air pockets on top but not many. Do I need to cut those out and refiberglass that part or put more fiberglass layers on and then sand it and fill with bondo???

Re: FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP
Saturday, June 04, 2005 7:09 AM
I had a few and cut them out and re did the glass.

But DO YOU have holes drilled all over? I have atleast 50 hols drilled in mine and let glass run through and glass the back where holes are.

Re: FIBERGLASSING DASH NEED HELP
Saturday, June 04, 2005 8:24 AM
you could get by without the holes if you wrap the fiberglass completly around the edges of the dash. if you didnt wrap around to the backside your going to have the problem of it seperating from the plastic dash piece over time. as for the air bubles i normally will pop them and fill them with resin, but since its just a dash piece and your going to lay a layer of cloth or two over top, i wouldnt worry about them. now if your top layer of glass has some air bubbles your going to need to pop those and fill them in.

why are we drilling holes between layers that just make more work for your self. just sand the first layer then clean the layer and apply the next layer . you about 3 layer of fiberglass cloth to get it strong and still remain flexible so that you can get back in the car.
i do this everyday and i have not problems(i work in a fiberglass shop).as for the problem of edges the best way to handle that in the future is to apply some gellcoat to the ssurfaceof the piece (esp. if it vinyl or real flexible).wen it is tacky then apply the cloth and wet out the gellcoat acts like glue to aadhesivethe piece to the ssurface, and remember to cut corners to ellm. bubbles. have done my rear deck arm rest center cconsoleand have the roof , front deck and backseat out and glassing as we speak. any one interested in a fiberglass rear deck without a third break light spot , i have made a mold and have some pieces to sell.
