Theres 2 bolts on the left side by the drivers side
2 on the passanger's side
2 up top by the vent next to the windshield
2 on the inside trim of the glove box
and 2 brass bolts inside the glove box that can be reached via a small hole located in the box
then from there just start poppin up...after you got the whole dash off....
there are then 2 more bolts on the plastic bezel around the actual radio and a/c cluster
1 is directly above the cig. lighter closest to the ignition
and the other is on the right side midle a/c vent..
You can also use a #15 star driver bit in place of the 7mm socket.
I think he may want to remove the ENTIRE dash, not just the top and radio bezel, though.
And to that, I say "Good Luck with all that!"
I hear it takes forever and kinda sucks.
^^^Yeah, you have to take the steering wheel off, so, grab a steering wheel puller. And I'm pretty sure I remember taking off the turn signal/wiper arms. For those you'll need a torx wrench, T15 like stated above.
It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes. The longest part being the steering wheel. Be sure to completely discharge your electrical system though because of the airbags - Take the battery out, flash the lights and honk the horn 10-15 times before screwing with that stuff. You don't have to unhook the passenger's airbag, only the driver's. Hope that helps.
It's not hard it's just really involved, I took apart my old 02's before. I'd say the hardest part was not loosing all the screws lol. What are you planing on doing or is it a secret?
i know how the radio bezel and top piece come off... wasn't sure if the steering wheel is pressed fit or just bolted on, and I know what to do with air bags and everything, I do this stuff for living
I just don't want to get it all 1/2 way apart to find out I need to stop because I don't have the tools I need
and Matt show season is over so I'm gonna start on my interior
what are your plans? i love the stock interior look of yours....i've done the painting and attempted fiberglass, and i've gone back to mostly stock now, dont do n e thing to mess it up!-

I wont mess it up
preaty much some of the stuff needs to be modified for the new audio setup.... exterior, engine, suspension, audio, video, have all been modified so the interior is the next logical step before redoing/going farther with other things.... its still gonna have a nice clean look don't worry and a majority of it will remain stock
and Matt the itch has been going for a while... no matter what I want to do I don't do it for a while cause I have alot of ideas and they usually fade as fast as they come, so before I modify/change anythign I hold off a while to let the idea evolve into somethign more specific or to see if I loose interest in it all together, the inside is preaty well throught out and decieded on, main reason I got the Jetta is so my car can sit in pieces and I can take my time and do it right the first time
Well it is so much fun man! It does take a while to do, but really it is not all that hard. I've gone all the way down to swap to the cavy dash. I don't think other then the 7mm and the #15 star you will need some extensions for here and there, and the puller for the wheel. I was getto and got everything done and then drove down to AutoZone cause I forgot to get the puller and just pulled the dash and put the wheel back on. Just remember to make sure you have the darn airbag wire back before you put the wheel on cause I forgot about it and had to take it back off to get it back out the middle.
Have fun buddy!
theres no bolt in the steering wheel? usually its a big bolt down the middle and then sometimes pressed on as well.... is there a bolt or nut or anything?
also thanks for the info so far
theres two torx bolts, behind, and then theres a big nut on behind the airbag.
there you need a steering whell puller

10mm
8mm
7mm
extensions
swivel helps for removing some of them
steering wheel puller
i didnt remove the wiper and turn signal arms when i did mine
the steering wheel has 2 torx screws scred into the back of it....check that you have the right bit for that.
if you plan on replacing the cluster....or if your anti-theft (passlock comes on after you unplug your cluster) reprogram it like this
1. Start the car and let it die. The theftlock light will be on, DO NOT TURN THE KEY OFF, OR OPEN ANY DOORS, OR TURN ON ANY ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. Just fold your hands under your arms and wait 10-15 minutes...
2. After the car stalls, the theftlock light will blink. wait until it stops blinking.
3. Wait 1 minute after it stops blinking.
4. Turn the key to off, wait 10 seconds, then start the car again.
You may have to do this 3 times for it to work correctly."
I just used a socket wrench, with i believe a 8/6 mm socket, and a philips head screw driver.....I have a 96 Caviler
the joy of working at VW/buick dealer
the buick guys all the special tools needed for dash removal, the sterring wheel removal tools, the @!#$ to lock the colon so nothign moves, air bag harness adapter to it doesn't get set off ect
also there are 15 and 13 bolts
15;s that hold the column up
and 13's that hold the metal cage in
also i think 13's hold the box in...a/c heat box
i think the wheel is held in place with an 18mm nut, can't remember exactly
