I have looked for this and cant find a detailed enough how-to. I got a universal shift knob i want to put on my stock shifter, i know i will probably have to take out the reverse safety thing. but how do you get the shift knob off, please dont say pull really hard, cause it wont budge or twist, or maybe my hands are slippery or something. I have a 2005 so thats why I have the reverse safety thing. So can someone help, -thanks.
I know on my '04 sunfire auto there is a little clip on the back (toward the dash). You could check for that but someone with a manual will answer u pretty soon.

I am sure that the manual will be different than the auto. And wouldnt the back of the shifter be facing the back of the car, not the dash? Maybe you just have a different perspective, but there isnt a clip to take out on mine anyway.
the 01 shifter just came right off, but i do remember hearing somthing about a clip in the newer clavs, look for a little c clip, if you dont find one then just pull real hard, mine was on there pretty good
If its a 3rd gen manual, then get a rag, or one of those rubber jar openers. Then litterally just twist it a few times and pull that $%@! off. Don't worry about it, I was scared(i was going to break something) but it will be fine. Just twist it around first and then yank it! Install the aftermarket knob per directions on package.
I had the same problem so i finally gave up.....but while driving i just kept playing with it...it finally came loose.....or another alternatve is to buy a B&M Short throw shifter....LOTTA FUN!!! only $160 so the choice is yours.
