Hey,
Well it seems like it gets asked all the time so i figured i'd make a how to.
The first thing you need to do is go get urself some paint. I used Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric spray in gloss black---
I purchased 4 but ended up using about 3.
The next step is to get your stock headliner out.
First, pop out the dome light plastic cover and take the light out.
****WARNING, if the dome light has been on, the bulb will be EXTREMELY HOT. I used some oven mitts to take it out***
Next you need to pop three push pins out. They are located here...
In the back
In the front under the visors.
You can use a pliers to get these out, be careful, but they do make special tool that looks like...
I can't remember what they are called but they are really handy so if u can find some, i would recommend picking one up.
You will also have to remove the visors, 3 torx screws.
You can now pull the headliner down and remove the dome light bulb clip (just slides off).
Many people wonder how to get it out of the car... just fold both ur seats flat and all the way forward and pull it out the door. Take ur time not to break anything and u'll be fine.
Next thing is to start painting. I would recommend just brushing the headliner off a little before hand to get any big chunks of dirt and what not off. Shake the cans up like it says, and start spraying in one direction, long even strokes. I found it a good idea to wipe off the nozzle every once in a while so i didn't get drops of paint going on the headliner. It will look like it isn't covering a lot, but resist the temptation to go back over it and completely black it out, it'll turn out. The following pics will show the "stages"
Out of the car.
About 2 passes.

Final
The final thing to paint is the push pins. I tried half azzing these and it doesn't work so do the prep. I wiped them down with mineral spirits, roughed up with steel wool and then rubbed again with mineral spirits.
Then I tried to find something to use to hold them while i painted them. I couldn't find anything that was usual but I found a hamburger bun worked really good. I shot it with the same paint, 2 coats, and then 1 coat clear.
When everything is dry, put the headliner in, reverse of take out procedure and you now have a new headliner color.
I would have pics of it afterwards in the car but it was late when I got done so I will see tomorrow if I can get some good pics.

exactly how i did mine, turned out amazing
It didn't turn out as dark as I would think? Can't you just do more passes, or does it not look good totally dark? Also, how well does it hold up?
well done now could you show me how to do the same thing but with a powered sunroof..p.s. love the hamburger bun very original

You could do more passes but I found that after I got to a point it didn't get much darker when i put more on. That pic doesn't really do it too much justice. When i went to put it back in the car with the push pins, it was so dark that i couldn't find the hole for the pins.
I'll try to get some pics tomorrow if its not as cloudy out. So far it has held up great. Granted thats just 2 days but it seems like its going to hold up.

Thanks. If I had a sunroof i would show you. There is someone that has done the same with a sunroof cover but i forget who it is. They might chime in. The only difference is going to be getting the headliner out and the sunroof cover but im not sure how to get the cover out.

did you do all your sprays the same direction or did you rotate the headliner between coats, thats what i did to keep it from coming out striped
.
^^^^good question. me waits on answer....
looks good, but what did you all do about the visors?? I see that you didnt mention anything about it and also Colorado jbody, you dont have any ?
thanks
mine are still uncoverd with gonna be recovering them i couldn't get the warning sticker off, no matter what i tried. If you dont have the sticker just spray them too.
yay a new project for me to do that is cheep! yes! i'm still looking for a body shop?

O, good idea. I did mine in all the same direction and as far as I can see it didn't come out looking striped but that it a good idea.
I was looking at your post on that link and you said keep the paint going all the way to the edge and past it which is a really good point cause if u stop, you can tell thats where u stopped and it doesn't look good.
I got some ok pics of it in my car. Sorry for such bic pics - they got blurry when i downsized them any further.
Somehow the images got mirrored so this one looks like I have RHD and i like it. Maybe a new project
This pic looks like it might have stripes. I'll have to go check tomorrow in the light.

Thanx. I put mine stock ones back in for now just in case i need to use them but my plan is to spray those too. I'm going for a modified but still stock sort of look in my car so i'm just gonna paint them. I will either cover the airbag sticker when i paint them or i was thinking of getting something like...
to put on the stock sticker.
Yes, i know it may be corny but i think it'd be funny.
I have plans for my passenger visor but i'm not letting those out quite yet.
-Seth
Do you think that would work with the stock seats? Or something that big would be better recovered?
I did my stock seats and they turned out ok. The only problem i have with them is the fact that they seem to attract alot of lint and i had that paint smell in my car for a cpl of days, even though i took them out to dye them. But I like them.

Just a couple questions, what sunfire headliners are compatible with an '03 two door? I assume the 04 and 05 will be. But how about earlier?
Second question, not quite related... if a person was going to paint their clear heater nobs while keeping them clear what would be the best paint for it? I'm thinking of an "ice blue" and in girlfriend's car maybe some kind of red. Any help would be great thanks.
well in reference to your second wuestion, i did mine with krylon stained glass paint. you can get it at any arts and crafts store. hope that helps
If it doesnt break then you didnt drive it hard enough!
I drive an automatic, I'll race you... 1 hand and 1 foot.

I'm not sure on your fiirst question. I'm thinking all 2 door 95 to 05 will work but im not totally sure.
As far as ur second question, use stained glass paint like ^^^ said.
-Seth
looks good but i would go with 'SEM Color Coat' instead of the duplicolor. Ive done one with each and the one using SEM came out like OEM texture, the one that i used that stuff came out a little harder texture...
Cool thanks a lot. The Krylon stained glass paint, is Krylon the brand? Or just the type of paint? Like, would I find it at Walmart?
Ya Krylon is the brand. You should be able to find it at walmart.

You forgot to mention that you already had the rear panels removed.. which would allow to very easily just unclip the headliner and pull it out. Not being an ass.. just pointing out that you at least need to loosen them to get it out (from what I've heard anyways).
