Quick question about dash lights
Monday, January 16, 2006 1:31 PM
I'm going to change the color of my dash lights and I have a few quick questions. First, how many do I need, and how hard are they to get to, and second, the lights in my factory radio are burning out. I'm wondering if they can be fixed so they light up the same as the guages when I'm done. I don't want to get rid of the factory head since it works just fine and I use external signal processors to clean up the sound.

I assume you're talking about your cavalier, first.

Changing any dash light colors will require removal of the dash pad and the front bezel. The HVAC panel has two bulbs in it, they can be replaced with #74 LEDs, it's a direct replacement. The LEDs will not be as bright as the stock bulbs though, and if they are colored, they may not shine through some areas of it at all (I have blue lights, and the orange/red sections hardly light up at all).

I don't know about the radio.

I know you can change the bulbs in the cluster, but I'm not sure how you do that. That's next on my own list of things to do.

As far as I know, the only way to change the lights on the cluster, is to solder LED's directly onto the board. Looks like way too much work.

or you can just paint the needles to have the light shine through

If you can suply me the cluster, i can solder the LED's on there for you.......
i can post up a pic when i get home of mine.....
i'm also looking into being ablue to change out the warning lights on the cluster too
if you have an onlder version, then there should be green plugs that unscrew, revealing the bulb...........

Seriously Buzz? I can get a cluster for cheap? How much do you want for transferring to blue LED's on a cluster?

Thanks, guys. I am doing this to my Cavy, yes. My Laser already has red lighting, which is what I want to switch to. I do a ton of night driving and red lighting is better for preserving night vision when going form lighted to unlighted areas. I think I can handle the panel lights, but for the cluster, and this is in a '97, if they require soldering, is there another option? Maybe an overlay?

Exodus 259---- > if you get me the cluster, i'll do it for you....
as far as price goes, i'm not entirely for sure...
there would be 3 stages that i will be able to do.
1) just the lights behind the cluster
2) stage 1 and the odometer lights
3) stage 2, and warning lights (including turn signals)

i would be able mix and match colors, if needed......

what would you guys say about 75 for stage 1, and letsay 100-125 for stage 2
I'm waiting on a cluster to perform a stage 3 swap, and i'll let you know how that works out, and be able to give it a better price estimate....

give me feedback........ please........

$75, is that with shipping? I don't see the LED's costing that much. I would say maybe $50?

the work involved..... not that LED's cost that much, it's a very painstaking process...
you can easily spend 2 hours replacing them.... and testing them, and retesting them...
mostly it's the soldering work, and a very steady hand.
If you wanna do it yourslef, go ahead.... i can tell you how....

What did you use for your HVAC panel? That's way too bright to be the typical #74 LED replacement deal.

if youre reffering to me, then, yes, it's the typical #74 replacement on the HVAC...

If you want your dash lights to light up red, then why not switch to a sufire instrument cluster. I know you have a 97 and so do I. I done the swap on my 97 red cavi with a little modification. And it looks awsome!

That looks really good! Can you post up some more pics and info on how u did it and what you needed to do it?

I love how the needles look on those. That'd look really good on my cluster since I have the white face gauges with blue reverse glow. The problem is, my needles stayed yellow. if they were that kickass blue, it'd totally look badass.

redcav1 -----------> shoot me an email @ buzz122@yahoo.com, or give me a call @ (386)566-5177

full brightness, yes..... they fade with the factory fader knob thingy

Exodus 259----> if you do this, then your needles WOULD light up in whatever color..... i don't know what kind of reverse glow you have....

Yes, I was referring to you, sorry for not specifying. I did the replacement on my HVAC and it's not half that bright: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/aaronofborg/Diary%20images/car/295d643a.jpg (linked due to size). I got the LEDs from: http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html , the ones at the bottom of course.

what about reliability of LED's? Will they ever burn out, or break from vibration or anything like that?
