Stupid Needles!!! Help??...
Wednesday, January 18, 2006 12:34 PM
Hey guys,

As many of people have undoubtably experienced (and written about on here)...I am having issues putting on my white face gauges. I removed my entire dash and held my stock speedometer gauges in my hand and was totally unable to make the switch due to the needles and prolly a lack of understanding. So now I am turing to you, my fellow J-Body family members...hoping to get some concrete advice.

How does this switch work? Can it be done myself or does it need to be done professionally? Seems like the needles won't be comin off and I know how important it is to not mess around with those babies.

What do ya think guys?

I appreciate the help for sure!...

You gotta try and angle them. The white face gauges should slide on over. Usually you have just enough room to slide them over. You can move the needles slightly, but just don't take them off. Thats the big concern.

if you don't take the needles off, they should reset in their "home" position, if they wer moved, no concern there.......

To do the install. Point all needles in the 12 o'clock position. Slide needles thru the bottom side of the holes in the new face. Easy as pie. Mmmmm...pie!

I wish it were that easy...

For my new face, I MUST remove the old one, no choice (btw this is on a 2k+), and the needles will not fit through the holes in the new face, they won't even fit through the holes on the old face.

Well... thats one cluster down... now I have to find a new one, needle removal didn't go so well for 3 of the 4 needles And yes, I knew ahead of time you can't remove them, I was doing this to see how they attached to the motors.

pretty much. thats how i did mine. when you try and get it over at the end, it does put a little pressure on the needles but it will be fine

btw dont take your needles off since you have an 00. it will ruin the cluster and you will have to buy a new one

I've got a 2001 and that's how I did it. And the OE backing is still on there.

o_O I never had to remove my old gauge face to do my install? Mine went right on over them, wired them up, and that was that.

well if you want different colour lighting to be bright you need to take off the old face
anyways i know a guy who knows how to do it but you have to take apart the gauge motors and everything and i havent been able to get him to give me a detailed description
anyways man once you figure it out definitely email me or pm me or something because i have a gauge face ive been waiting to put on for a long time

Thanks for all the advice so far guys!

I guess I'll have to see what happens when I get the cluster in my hands again. I'm not sure if any of you guys got your gauges from High Rev Motorsports like I did but my plan of attack appears to be leave the old backing on and just apply the new one over it by slipping the needles through the holes.

I was thinking too that I have also replaced my HVAC panel with a white face look and I just peeled the old one off and applied the new one...flawless. Would the OE speedometer gauges be the same way??...just peel off? Doesn't make sense to put on white face/blue backlight over the ugly OE backing as it is so dark and..well...red.

Anyways, I'll keep on checking this post to see what you guys think and can share from your past experiences.

Thanks again guys!

Travis

PS--> I'd loooove to see some pics of your gauges if ya got any!!

apparently the only way to take the old one off is to cut it up alot cus its not just a sticker like the hvac
its a shame your giving up on doing it right tho....
cus from what ive seen most people cut slits under the needles to get it to slide or they end up cutting the holes bigger either one its kinda mickey mouse if you ask me
anyways ive gotta get my hands on a cluster for cheap and then maybe i can figure this out.......

Yeah man, all you do is slip it over the needles. The needles don't have to be in any particular direction. What I did was started from the left and worked my way to the right

Hope that helped

The OEM color doesnt show through the overlays. I drive at night with my glow gauges off sometimes and my needles are the only thing that lights up.

My guages don't show through either. The only light that comes through is for the needles. The white face gauges have a solid enough backing to block all the light from the back, and they will light up on their own when wired up.
