help with a gauge pod idea
Friday, February 03, 2006 4:12 PM
I was looking at the interior of my Cav, and I think 3 of the 2 1/16" gauges should be able to fit between the A pillar and the dash. basically somehow mounted on the left "curved" side of the dash pad over the instrument panel. they should be able to fit there without blocking the windshield, and angled enough so it's easily seen by the driver.
just asking for thoughts on this, and ideas how to build the setup and mount it to the dashpad. I've never done anything like this, but I might just give it a try.
I think this would be a good alternative for people who don't want to lose their center vents, but who don't like A pillar pods either.

thats not a bad idea. definitely post pics if you do it. i've actually considered doing something similar to that. but instead i decided to eliminate the left center vent and put 2 gauges in there, so i still have one functional center vent.

well right now I'm looking for ways/ideas to even start it, and make it look good on the dash. I have a tan interior, and have no plans to change it in the near future.

mock it up with hot glue and balsa wood and use some pvc pipes the size that your gauges could fit into. and just pretty much glue a structure togather using the balsa wood and pvc to make a ruff design on how you want it to look. cover in fleece, and glass it to what ever shape you like.

thanks for the help. I don't want it looking like a big square block, and I'd like to maybe taper it in the rear. I think I'm going to start drawing up some designs this weekend.
any ideas on how to mount it to the pad?

well i was thinking about this two but i am constantly drawing new ideas in school... the only thing i ever do in there lol. i was thinking about on the spot your talking about, right infront of the front windshield defroster vest (that thing in the dash), making a custom one and moved my HVAC to in the center counsel and having them "aimed" at my... or some how get a hold of the covette interior and see if i can get the projectors out of them and have them projected up onto the window. if you like any of the ideas or if you think of anything that you would like, i most likly have thought of it so i can post pictures of it if you would like to see.

Brining this back from the dead.

Started playing with this idea myself this weekend.

Anyone have pics or ideas of where to start?

I was looking that WRX design from autometer and a starting place, but knowing I am going to need to reshape it to fit the curves and such.

Also need to figure out hoe to revinyl it when i am done to make it look OEM.

just a heads up, if youve never used fiberglass i'd suggest working on a smaller project first and getting it down before you started on something big like a dash.

YUP i agree, why I think I am gonig to start with the power mirror gauge pod first, then to console (just a mod in the closed box first) while I learn this art before I tackle the dash. I also getting help from someone thats already done it!

Yea, start on a smaller project first. I haven't done the dash yet, but it is my next project. And very important, when you do the dash, make sure you reinstall it while it is drying so that you know it will fit. Otherwise it will shrink/warp and you will have a big headache trying to fix it.

Wide Body Progress
