Ok. I recently removed many components from my engine because there was a problem with it. Long story short, I found a cracked piston due to a spun rod bearing and the bottom end needs a complete rebuild.
Anyways, I know the Dupli-Color 1200° ceramic spray paint is supposedly bad to use on your header/ exhaust manifold. What I would like to do however, is while the majority of the parts are out of the engine, is to spray paint them. Because they are made of aluminum, I can't Imagine they would get hot enough to chip the paint off (This is a completely uneducated guess).
Has anyone had any experience with painting parts of the engine, like the timing chain housing, cam carriers, or even the head. If so, have you tried the Dupli-Color High Heat 1200° spray paint on them. While everything is apart, I want to dress up the engine as well as I can. Thanks.
Ive used all types of high temp aint in the past, and they last in a harsh environment for a good amount of time if preped properly.
Example: the valvecover in my sig is 1200 degree dupli color spray paint. Never had any problems.
Though 500 degree paint would be fine for it.
Just make sure everything is free of dirt, dust , oil and greases. Take the time to tape off everything you dont want to paint, Blue painters tape is what i reccommed. Some mild sand is neccassay for the paint to stick well, and to look good. How much sanding is needed is up to you.
you will not be able to paint the header with paint! powder coat even gets messed up on it... you need to eather get a new header that is polished/ armor coated polished so it to be different from the color it is now. all other paints will chip of dure to the extreem heat and it will end up like it started.

No offense Kyle, but did you even read the entire post. I thought I made myself clear that I knew that I can't paint the exhaust manifold. I mentioned the exhaust manifold so that I wouldn't get an auto response like that. No hard feelings, but that kind of stuff just bothers me.
Anyways, has anyone else had any problems with painting the timing chain housing, cam carriers, head or block on the 2.4L engine. I think I am going to paint it all red to match (or at least come close to matching) the color of my car. I had already painted the H.O. manifold and Ignition cover over the summer, and it looks pretty close to the red of the cavalier. I may re-paint the ignition cover white, and make the lettering red.
I'm sorry to type so much, but I would also like to know your thoughts on whether you would find that kind of paint scheme aesthetically pleasing, boring, or just obnoxious. Thanks again.
I have more background with V8s but I suppose paint on engines doesnt know the difference. I have had great luck with the regular VHT paint on non exhaust parts of the engine. The main thing is to follow directions. Make sure the parts are extremely clean and smooth, brake cleaner is my cleaner of choice. The when ready to paint spray a light tack coat and let set up for a few minutes. Then come back and spray a regular coat, wait 10 minutes or so, spray another to make sure everything is even, wait another 10 minutes and spray with a clear coat. You will have a very shiny paint job that should stand up to anything you can throw at it. make sure you dont get the paint on too thick or it will come off later, and make sure you to adequate prep work and you will be good to go.

Thanks Dennis. Yeah I had scrubbed the parts well with a wire brush and used the brake cleaner, which worked like a charm. I am going to go ahead and paint the parts tonight. Thanks again for everyones help.
you could try a por15 engine paining kit. pretty tough stuff, and prevents corrosion and oil stains.
