Ok now im not saying anything against the other way of making an overlay and mine held up great till the day I removed it but my new one has a much different look. I searched the forums and it seems everyone is just printing one on paper and clear coating it. My method is similar but you have a much better control of where and how the light shines thru.
What you need-
-A basic understanding of photo shop or know someone who does.
-A decent printer, or a printing store.
-Transparency paper (like the teachers used back in the day)
Ok so the more money you want to spend the better this will come out but it could be done for a few dollars. First you need to go to a office supply store and buy some transparency paper. If your gonna print this yourself you cant get anything to thick or it wont go thru your printer, but the thicker the paper the better product you get. For the demo one im making for this post i printed my self but the one in my car I had Staples print out for me for about $2.50.
Next is the fun part. Design the overlay any way you want. The biggest advantage to this process is you can use shading or a gradient in your overlay and the light will shine thru. anyway make any design you want and be as creative as you want with the light that will come thru. Print this out on a clean sheet of transparency paper. Now on my printer the ink doesn't dry perfect and when back lit even the black spots are lit up but on the thicker paper with the printed design at staples you are done at this point. Alittle bit of adhesive of your choice and your done.
If you are doing all the printing there is one more step. Ive tried everything from thin matte board to plain white paper and everything works. Just cut out the havc shape on this other piece and affix it to the back of your design piece. Remember to make cuts anywhere you want light. Now it'll be solid where you want it and lit up in the other spots.
This is a quick one i threw together to show you how this works but as soon as my leds come in the mail I will have pics of my finished piece. This is on a light board.
nice work

Hmmm interesting.................yeah anyone have a template for an '03-'05
Hey Rob I have a white one just like above. $20 shipped and she is yours
Yeah thats the wrong picture. You take the old cover off and put this one on. i will put up the pic of the other demo one i made soon. Its lit oppisite of the one above.
ok here it is, The cameras not taking good pics of the contrast. But anyway im just showing how using this you can print a image using any color and as long as its not black the white lights of your car will back light it. If you wanted you could print a rainbow on it and all the colors would be lit up. No this is not the design i have in my car this is just something i threw together and yes it is time to get a new camera.
how bright does it illuminate cause i know that after so many face the lights going to start to dull.
JBO'S Mr. 64.....
It depends on how solid you keep the color. if you lower the transparency of the color alittlw bit itll shine alot brighter but even being completly solid it lights up more then enough at night.
Can you photoshop 1 for a 2004 Cavalier w/A/C. Make the black part look aluminum or billet.

id like one to but for the 96-99 and i want a black background with blue accents. like the a/c and the hot cold thingand all that stuff
i still need to print mine out along with my gauge overlay. if anyone remembers back last spring i was one of the few making them for people in the Image Manipulation thread. If you go in there and search, you should be able to find the 95-02 HVAC and the 95-99 Cavalier Gauge Templates. JB Papa Bear made the HVAC template and I had made the Gauge templates. I did try getting scans of the rest of them to make templates for but no one was willing to get me scans of them.
