how to get that glass smooth finish for painted in

So I've been workin om my interior for quite some time its near the end. I got all my little scratches and what not out and everything is fine the only thing is that once I put the base paint and then the clearcoat it doesn't comeout glass smooth. It's shiny as hell but its like you can see an almost spotty look.

After the base coat I saned with 400 grit and cleaned the parts then put the clear on and wet sanded with 1500 and then waxed the parts but even then that just made it look worse.

It looks better when I just dont wet sand at all.

What am I doing wrong? not putting on heavy enough coats of the clear? am I wet sanding wrong?

Why did you sand the base coat with 400 grit??? You should have laid the base coat then just clear then wet sand with 2000 grit till glass looking. Thats what the pro body shop guy told me what he does with everything and hese been doing it for 30 years. Thats what i did and mine turned out like glass.

i think i iknow exactly what youre talking about, cuz i ran into that myself today!! i dont think it has anything to do with sanding. when you spray the paint on, the spots that you're talking about come from not going thick enough. if you tilt the piece or get at a good angle as you spray, you can see what causes it. if you go slow and from edge to edge, you shouldnt have any problems. but if you're going too fast, or if you stop in the middle of a piece, then you'll get those spotes.
if you take a piece of cardboard hold the can in one spot and spray until the center of the spray area is covered, you should notice those spots along the diameter of the spray area.

just take your time and becareful... its a pain!!

i sanded in between cause I read one of the write ups on here... I think it was cause I was painting to fast...

so your saying paint with base and then clear and then wet sand till its glass smooth but it will be hazy first right? then wax it to get the shine back?

if I go nice and smooth strokes say a medium coat, let it sit for 5 - 10 then spray another coat that should take care of it?

Flash time should be 15 minutes between clear coats. Spray about 3 coats of clear in a 45 minutes time period then wait say 24 hours then wetsand with 2000 grit and a rubber sanding block. Meguires makes them. After that use some machining glaze. The lighter the color the lower the grit so get the lightest color you can find. Buff with that and itll look like glass. Your not supposed to wax a new paint job for like 3 months because the solvernts are still escaping and waxing confines them in the paint. The machine glaze protects it for the 3 months.

one other question I had is what do I do about the pieces that already have there base and clear coat on them already? Do I wetsand them and then do the 3 coats of clear with 15 minute flash time?

plastic car parts are a pain to paint. Especially if you use Armor-all type products.

It took me about 3 washings in soap and HOT water then another 3-5 rises in alcohol mix. and I still got a small amout of "orange peel"

As far as you question with what to do with already done parts. I personally would sand it right down again almost to original colour or close as possible. Get a few of the base coats off as well as all clear coats

Then use alcohol to clean parts and let air dry for an hour or so.

After they are DRY re spray 1-2 THIN coats of colour and leave overnight to harden up really good.

Once cured 24 hours or so spray 5-10 THIN coats of clear lightly sanding with 2000 in between each.

If you REALLY want a mirror like clear finish coat the parts in Resin. Like a clear poly-urithaine. If you have ever been to a bar with that THICK plastic coat thats what it is. Just dunk in and hang to dry. You can then use a dremel to buff them up.

Thats my opinion anyways.
