Shift knob w/ hidden button?
Thursday, August 24, 2006 1:13 AM
Ok, heres the deal. I have a 1996 sunfire auto. I plan on changing the shift knob to a manual shift knob. Mainly cause it looks much better. The thing is I'm trying to find a manual shift knob with a hidden button under a flip plate.. Similat to the one in this link.

I would pick up this knob in a heartbeat except for the fact that the button is a momentary switch and not a toggle switch. I need it to toggle the swith because i plan to wire it up to the existing ETS switch. The momentary switch just wont do. I was wondering if anyone had come across anything similar to what I'm looking for. I've searched the forums and not seen anything and I'm currently looking online and calling venders. Sofar no good. If anyone has seen anything or has any ideas who might, It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. You've all been great.

I was in at a PEP BOYS on like Friday last week and seen a manual shift knob there with a flip top with a hidden button. I was thinking of doing the same thing to mine.

GIT 'ER DONE!

The switch is just mounted in with a little clip, pry the clip off, and install any switch you want.

^^ that may be tru.. but if u mount a switch taller then the button.. u have to either mount it deep in the knob if u can.. or cut out the top of shifter to allow the switch to peak through the top.. but they might make on/off switches same size as that instead of just a button to turn on sumthing and when u let go it turns off..

Haha. Thanks alot guys. The thought never even crossed my mind to remove the button and replace it with a different one. Thats ingenious. To bad I didn't think of it. LOL I'm pretty sure that they do make toggle switches around that size. If I have to, I have no problem boring out the cap some to accomidate a new switch. Rather not have it visible at all though. So as to not hit it by accident all of the time when I rest my hand on the shifter. Man, I do miss driving a manual. LOL. Thanks guys. As always, you've all been a great help. Keep up the good work.

Two thumbs up. lol ===> d_-[o.O]-_b

just get a universal shift knob. the one in the link on my first post should work. I don't see why it wouldn't. It has 5 adaptor sleeves aswell so as to not let the shifter have play. a tight fit so to speak. What is the diameter of our shifters? Is it larger then 1/2 Inch? Actualy thats a good question. lol What is the diameter of the shifters on our cars? Sfires/cavs? Auto and manual? It shouldnt be larger then 1/2 inch right?

because in a manual cavalier you have to lift up to get into reverse. This makes universal knobs useless.

I've never heard of a momentary switch, I never knew there was a difference in toggle and momentary, can someone explain?

DeceptiCav - The easiest way for me to explain it is
- A Momentary switch when pressed activates its intended function and deactivates when released.Think of the volume button on your radio. Pressed, the volume continues to go up or down. Released it stops.
-A Toggle switch on the otherhand toggles the function on and off. Similar to that of the light switch in a home or even the AC button in your car. press n release to activate. press n release again to deactivate.
An example of Both, a momentary AND toggle switch in one, look at the driversside power window button. If you press it all the way, you hear/feel a faint click and the window automatically goes all the way down even after released. Now the same button not pressed all the way, without that click will only godown until you release the switch.
I hope I explained it well enuff for you to understand.

B.G - But the shifters are threaded at the top are they not? Every universal shifter I've ever bought worked for any treaded shifter. You just put in a sleave slightly smaller then your shifter. Tighten the screws on the side into the sleave then screw on the new knob. The threads on shifter would thread its own thread line into the sleave. Then just tighten t e screws more while on the shifter. I never had any problems with the knob coming off before. It wouldnt pull off. Had to be twisted off. Even if the shifter needs to be pulled some to get into reverse, I still don't understand why they wouldnt work? Am I missing something?

How would you deal with the button on top of the stock shifter in an auto to put an aftermarket one without a button on, especially one with a switch instead?

That auto momo knob is nasty. I like that thing.
As to the manual knob on an auto,There is a post on the site somewhere. No idea where though. If you remove your knob and look at the mechanism. It's fairly easy to figure out how to do it tho. BUT keep inmind you will be bypassing a safty feature built into the knob. aka that button. lol. If you replace it with a maunal knob, of course there would nolonger be a button to press to unlock the shifter to move it. It would freely move from park all the way down to first. If you do decide to do this, do at your own risk. Do not accidenily bump the knob into park or somthing like that. Your bypassing the mechanism that keeps you from doing so.

-Ricky- Still like that Momo knob. First I ever seen it myself.
