Fiberglass question
Saturday, September 02, 2006 8:45 AM
I have been reading a lot on how to fiberglass recently, but there is one thing that I am still uncertain on. My friend said that he just laid down the fiberglass in one big sheet and then put 3 0r 4 coats of resin over it. His looks nice, but everything that I have read said to put down several layers of fiberglass and keep putting resin on it as you go. His way sounds easier and lighter but I know generally the easy way meens that it is a lot lower quality. Has anyone done it this way or have any input on why not to do it like this? Any help would be nice, Thanks in advance.

P.S. Yes I did a search.

i know the strength wont be there at all. the resin doesnt give the peice the strength, its the fiberglass. depending on what it is, you would want it to flex, and i have seen people do one layer of fiberglass and, didnt have any problems. but i just dont want to risk having to year somthing apart and re-doing it because i slacked.

Yea, the actual matting is what gives fiberglass its strength. And several layers of resin will not make it lighter, but much heavier. I would recommened using the approach that you hear about, and not what your friend suggested. Check out my fibergass sticky at the top of the page.

Also, what did he fiberglass, and what are you looking to fiberglass?

Thanks for the help everyone. He fiberglass es speaker boxes and stuff like that. I am going to be fiber glassing everything on the interior of my car assuming that I can do it right. My first project will be the dash then I am going to take it from there.

I would not recommend starting with the dash. That is a big project with plenty of places to screw up if you have not fiberglassed before. Start with something smaller or easier.

Also, much of you interior (plastic pieces) can simply be sanded down and painted, and it will looked fiberglass and save you lots of time/money.

And... make sure whatever you fiberglass you reinstall soon after you do it(once it is dry enough to not move... after like 1/2 hour). You will want it to have time to cure in the car.. Otherwise it will shrink/warp and not fit when you go to reinstall it. Follow my sticky and you should be pretty good.

yeah your friend is making some very weak pieces. he's waiting resin and not really adding any strength to the piece.
