advice on how to repaint a painted interior
Thursday, September 07, 2006 8:48 PM
I've done all the searching I can handle...but still no answers. I painted my interior a while back and am looking to change up the colors. I'm wondering how I should go about it. Should I try to take the old paint off with some paint thinner? rub it down with some rubbing alcohol? just go over it with some primer?

I've found a lot of tutorials and questions from people who outline how to do it the first time, but I'm looking for some advice on how to repaint a painted interior. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Sand it down...same process as painting it

Just follow the steps in the tutorial. Same sanding and cleaning directions I am assuming shouldn't be much different.

I'm not looking for a glassed look. The first time, I just layed down some primer, and painted. So all of the pieces still have the factory texture to them.

as long as the paint is still holding up fine you should be able to paint right over it. if your old paint is flaking or coming off in spots you may want to get rid of it before you paint, really just all depends on how the old stuff is holding up

it seems to be holding up fine, but I'm a little worried about just painting over the old stuff. I feel like I should clean it with something, but I don't want the cleaning product to mess up the paint.

I can't think of anything that will strip of the old paint and not eat into the plastic 3M has a grey scratch pad that will scuff the old paint well but not take off any texture from the plastic

is there anything that I could use to clean off the old pieces that wouldn't damage the plastic or the old paint? I'm worried about my current painted pieces not taking paint well due to dirt/oil/cleaning products/or anything else.

Actually, if you went over the pieces with a high grit sandpaper (400+), it won't sand anything off heavily, but it will smooth over the paint, and you should be able to re-primer over that (after cleaning first!!!) and repaint it no problems. I do know that most paint thinners do eat away at plastic if it isn't used properly, so you may want to do the sand method so nothing gets messed up.

Yea, give it a quick scuff with some higher grit sandpaper, clean with soap/water, then rubbign alcohol, primer/paint/clear.

Thanks for all the input so far guys...but I've got another one...

When I painted my interior the first time, I used primer and Krylon Fusion on the top dash piece (you all know, the vinyl piece everyone says to use vinyl die on)...How do you suppose I should go about cleaning that off so I can use the vinyl dye?

And in my defense (for the people who are going to say it was a stupid thing to do) it has held up for two years pretty well, and wasn't that sticky.

Thanks for the input!

Also, while searching around I found some people who have used a high build primer on their dash pieces. Anyone have any experience with that stuff? From the sounds of it, I think I should be able to just spray that on over what I have now, and repaint. But I'd be worried about it cracking or something. Any thoughts?
