Why did this happen to my dash paint?!
Thursday, September 21, 2006 11:53 AM

I began to fix it today and the paint is just peeling right off, I used Duplicolor Vinyl and fabric paint, Duplicolor filler primer, and Duplicolor Clear coat, these bubbles have only occured on the top vinyl part of the dash, not on the plastic passenger side airbag cover or any other plastic pieces. The possible reasons I could think of are, the paint isn't good/strong enough and I should've just used Krylon like my friend has 2-3 years ago and his is still fine, I didn't let it dry long enough before putting it back in the car, I only waited about an hour tops before putting it back in, combined with the heat from the sun and being inside the car with the windows up and the dash just baking in the sun. AND it also seems like air is coming up from all the deep scratches in the dash from sanding it, you can see that by these pics, is this going to happen again regardless of what paint I use?

The reason it happened as far as i can tel is you did it wrong...you do not need to use the primer or any or that..if your going to use the dye..get another pad prep it well..ie rubbing alcohol and scour pad and then spray the vynil dye directly on it....no clear nothing..i did that and it never ever came off ..if you are going to use paint and clear..then use duplicolor paint and clear....but for best results specially on a black dash use just the dye....my best idea on why it happened is they are not overly compatable products..phil

Huh? I didn't use dye. And the paint I used was Duplicolor vinyl paint, it was black paint on a charcoal colored dash, I also used Duplicolor primer and Duplicolor clear coat. Numerous coats of each.

*edit* Aha, I see what you're saying, I should've just sprayed the Duplicolor vinyl paint on the dash as is, without primer or clear.

*edit again* But I also did the same exact process with the same materials and I havn't gotten one bubble on anything plastic, just the top vinyl part of the dash.

plastic can take that kinda prep and paint....vinyl cant....for vinyl, just spray the dye and thats it...no clear, no primer...nothing

on plastic, the primer is needed as well as some prep

F*ck this, it's damn near impossible to sand it again now that it's cleared and painted unless I get some lacquer thinner or whatnot but screw this I'm not sanding it all over again for a mediocre painted interior, I'm gonna glass it like I wanted to in the first place and sand that down and paint it.

Poor misguided youth. Sanding that vinyl dash pad will only ruin it. It's vinyl. Sandpaper and vinyl do not get along any more than styrofoam and race gas. They don't like each other.

Just go down to the salvage yard, drop a little green on a new dash pad, clean the fukk out of it, and dye it. Don't primer it, don't bondo it to remove the grain, just dye it.

^^i hope u dont think your interior looks like glass, cuz it sure dosent.

and Lance....to properly glass your dash, you're gonna have to pull all that vinyl u painted right off. hope you get the look you're going for.

almost looks like someone shot the paint on over water or it was too damp.

what else was the to contribute theyve already pointed out what you did wrong....
no sand, no primer, no paint... just clean and vinyl dye....

some people put too much thought into things... really its not brain surgery

Something similar happened to my armrest, some parts were dull, and others shiny, and it didn't hold well at all. I figured it was because of the humidity, didn't prime or use clear just cleaned it real well and used vinyl dye... Now im just going to fill the holes then paint it smooth.

I was doing exactly what this thread said to do http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=45&i=70341&t=70341 only he regretted to leave out what to do about the VINYL parts.

first off you should have noticed a difference in the texture between and softness of the 2. i mean who cant... and 2 once you found out it was vinyl you should have went Here and everything would have been just fine... sorry but its hard for me too feel sorry for those who dont do enough research on things... i dont mean to bash btw

Yea, sorry. I thought I mentioned that, but it must of been in my fiberglassing tutorial, not my painting one. Anyone, listen to these guys, they are correct. Also, if you decide to fiberglass it, you need to peel off the vinyl and drill holes, then apply resin to both sides so it will stick to itself. Anymore questions just ask.

I wasn't looking for sympathy nor did I ask for it, I was asking why it did what it did. And yes of course I felt the difference in textures when sanding the vinyl was a bitch and a 1/2, but since nothing was mentioned in the Tutorial I figured it didn't matter.

Nice!

why do certain people always insist on being pricks?

Hate that turned out bad for you! I'd say glass it like you want and you'll end up with what you are looking for.

Word of warning though...sun through the windshield and heat build up in the car can and may bubble even a nicely prepped and painted glassed dash. Mine is fully glassed and I always use sun shades and crack the sunroof whenever I can! I also try and park under or near trees. Mine has been fine for a year now but I was warned to watch out for heat and direct sunlight...so far so good. So just thought I'd share to help out some...you may already know that though?

Good luck with it and post up some pics when done!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

I Hate vinyl painted cars it just looks half assed carbon fibre is hot and fibreglassing my two bits! That said from your pics there was a something on the vinyl that mixed into the primer you can aslo see the sand marks! big no no on sandpaper thats why! use 3m red or gray pads they don't make thoses marks At the shop on any rubber or plastics vinyl we spray the part down with water and vinager and a clean rag then spray it with water and baking soda with and another clean rag that way theres no oil or dust and then the acid from the vinger is netualized with the baking soda and water

Glassing is a whole other level then just painting a piece of vinyl ..Before doing a whole dash try reading up and asking alot of questions followed by doing a small part like the middle of a door where its flat if you hate sanding and resanding this job isn't for you theres lots of posts on this here with pics good luck don't forget to post them when your done!

if you wanna glass your dash, your in for alot more work. you have to peel the vinyl off the dash then you have to drill a ton of holes in the dash so the resin can seep through and hold to the dash. then you have to make sure you have enough layers on the dash for when you put it back in that it fits right and doesnt have any gaps. if you take the vinyl off and just put the dash back in you'll see all the gaps. the vinyl helps fill that so you need to add a certain amount of resin to the dash to fill that. plus not to mention you have to sand ALOT to make it smooth.

Got that right. Last time I did any fiberglass I about wore my hands to the bone trying to sand everything smooth. If there's any advice I can offer, it's get an electric sander. I didn't have one and I was hating life. Power tools are your friend.

Did my dash about 3 years ago with Black Vinyl paint from Pepboys. I forget the brand. Clean of the dash with rubbing alcohol gave it about 4 coats and it is not peeling. I wanted my dash to look stock but just black. So far no problems with it 3 years later.
