Get one from a '98 Z24. I've had two '98 Zs and neither of them developed the crack, one had almost 70k miles on it, the other 90k.

There are 3-4 screws that hold the dash to the firewall. I believe if you were to put some kind of rubber or strong foam "bushing" behind those screws, cavalier's wouldn't have this issue.

On mine, the plastic around the center screw (under the defrost vent) actually broke before the dash ever did. I think if you give the dash a little bit of play for when the body flexes, then this will help the issue. Many people attribute the crack to heat. Well, my 96 was in Florida for it's entire life and I never developed this issue. I really think it's a stress crack on the plastic.

Loosen the bolts that muffin stated and do suspension mods that get rid of body roll like sway bars and strut tower braces and you should be fine. Mine is 4 years old now and no cracks yet knock on wood. Mine has also see chicago heat and cold and now san diego heat.

Its part of the entire dash. You would either have to replace the entire dash or glass it.

Mine is a '99 base model. My dash has 4 cracks in it. I'm going to replace.

I'm going to replace with a 2000+ dash. I'd like to be able to use the cupholder AND change CDs. (Car has 42k, no reason to get rid of it. Might as well fix two gripes at once.)

Anyone got a part number/price for this, but in 2000 style?

And what about a source for some rubber or plastic washers?

lol, i have a WHITE 98 z24...and the dash is cracked in the middle...so there goes that theory
94,XXX miles!

although-i have a dash out of a base 95 and its FLAWLESS!! no crack!
its going in soon...

what im going to do is cut tiny peices of dynamat, then place them under EVERY screw and or bolt that the dash mounts with. i hope it works...if not, ima just cover that portion with the crack with some black leather or something to match the interior im going with well.

that is a 2000 dash you have shown there...

i have swapped in the 2000+ dash in my 98, my 98 was fine, and my 2000 dash (even though the car that it was in was in a rollover accident) never had a problem

Since you've done the swap, is it just the big piece there and the bezel that are different?

Will the top cover and airbag from my '99 bolt on to it?

How about HVAC control and heater core?

(I know the radio's different... )
