05 cav gauge cluster problem, please help

My problem is when I start my car sometimes the fuel needle go's way past the full mark. I notice it when I fill up for gas and sometime it just does it out off the blue. Today it happened at Kmart and I took notice that the temp gauge was starting to do the same thing.I just want to know if anybody else has this problem with their gauges and if so what causes this to happen.

Take it to the dealer. I'm assuming your warranty is still valid..

Hmmm, I have an 05 and haven't noticed anything strange like that. The only time my fuel gauge went crazy is when I filled my tank with the car running. Then my tank said it was empty, then half, then a quarter, then full, then half. It went screwy. Until I shut off and restarted the car and it reset itself and hasn't messed up since.

Bumping this up because mine have been doing the same thing. I shut the car off and the gas needle doesn't drop down to E.. maybe to 1/4 or so.. so when I start it up again, it considers 1/4 to be E and goes up from there. I thought it was a voltage issue so I pulled my battery and charged it at work (it was low). Put it back in and everything seemed ok at first, but when I got home and turned the car off, it did it again. Anyone know what causes this, because mine's an 03 with close to 80k on it, so warrenties are out of the question for me =P

Well the thing is is that it doesn't ALWAYS stop at 1/4. Sometimes it will drop down to E, other times it'll stop even higher than 1/4 (and it will keep stopping hgher the more I turn the key to on then off.), So that's not really an option at all.. plus it's an 03, so I couldn't pull the needles if I wanted to.

It probably would have been wouldn't it?

or I could just waste time making a pointless thread

when to begin, I could have just searched for this issue...Right?

As far as my style of typing, it's different wouldn't you say? And I don't see how

reading it is challenging. If anything it's more legible tydt

Mine aren't quite doing that. I'll try to explain it as best as I can.

Car is off, gas gauge is on E. I have 1/2 tank of gas.

Car running, gas gauge is on 1/2.

Turn car off, gas gauge drops to 1/4.

Turn car back on, gas gauge now reads 3/4.

Turn car off, gauge drops to 1/2.

Turn car on, gauge reads Full.

It fluctuates between different stopping points, and will eventually read normally again, and then will eventually start doing that again. It never changes WHILE driving, only when I turn the car off. My temp gauge also does this from time to time. Oh and when I press down on the wiper arm (for the one time "mist wipe"), sometimes it will go one full sweep, then start on another but stop so the wipers are about 3 inches from their normal "resting spot" and other times it will make two full sweeps before it stops. And no, I'm not hyolding it down long enough for it to run two full times.

I know there's SOMETHING electricly wrong going on with my car.. I just would like to know how the @!#$ to fix it.. it's pissing me off. If fixing the gauges is as simple as replacing them, then I'll be ordering the 03 Sunfire cluster I saw on eBay. As far as the wiper arm.. I've got nothing. Only thing I can come up with is that the computer is maybe getting inconsistant voltage, which is causing things to act all crazy.

Update:

Temp gauge needle was ALMOST touching the speedometer needle. Pulled over somewhere, disconnected the negative, waited, reconnected it, Needles reset to normal. Temp gauge was acting ok for the most part.. it only did it's little problem once and then went back to normal. The gas gauge needle however is now on the OTHER side of the gauge (ie: it's pointing to the right now) and is hindering the temp needle from going past about 120. I'm ordering an 03 Sunfire cluster from work today, I can get one for $50.. but I do have a question, will driving it like that with the needles battling it out harm anything? I'd think not, but I'd like some other input on it. Thanks.
