this has been posted many times.. but

if u feel the front of the shift knob u should feel like a slot in it.. there is a staple holding it there.. just take a flat head and pry the staple out, then the shift knob will pull off.. u might need to pull the shifter all teh way back to get ur flathead in there to pry it out.

as for new shiftknobs u can find some at junkyard in other sunfires or cavaliers(and grand am, camaros and a few other non Js will work also) if u like any of them. or u can go to auto zone and look.. you could also get a manual shift knob to work but that takes some work if ur up to it

btw one thing people like to do is shorten the automatic shifter.. It gives no performance gain but it looks a lil nicer.. plus its more comfortable for me.. i can rest my arm on the arm rest and my hand on the shifter cuz there more level now so its a lil more comfortable.. But u will have people bitching o why did u shorten it, trying to be like a manual blah blah..
here is a pic of my shifter shortened so u know what im talking about, i think its shortened bout 2inchs. Ill prolly go lower once i get my new shiftknob but its nice for now. btw i swapped out the box with square button stock shifter for this one out of a 04 cavalier.. feels nicer to be able to just rest my hand on it while driving.

Hope this might have helped

If you have a 2k+, just grab a hold of it and start twisting and pulling. It'll come off eventually. Anything else, take out that little c-clip in front of the shifter using a standard screwdriver and it'll pop right off with ease.

Information in the following section (shift knob & shifter) was provided by SilverStallion
1) I wanna replace my shift knob, how do i do that??? First i recommend you take out the boot. To do this you just have to squeeze both sides of the plastic peice connecting the boot to the lower dash. Next, make sure your hands are nice and dry so you can maximize gription (i know its not a word). Twist and pull the shifter like a Mofo. It'll come off, trust me.

2) You mean you can shorten the stick?? Yes. I cut about 1 inch and a half from the top. I just took a metal saw to it and hacked away. If you have any other power tool that can do the job quicker, damn you for not lending it to me.

3) Replacment shift knob. Now I'm not that familiar with all the other methods different companies use to install their knobs, but with MOMO, they have a universal setup. They come with rubber "adapters" that fit onto your metal stick so that their knob fits nice and snug. Just attach it and voila! Presto! Daddy's got a new toy!

posted all the time and you still havent learned anything j/k

95-99s have the C clip. 00-05s you just have to work it and keep pulling
